Liberty, Retrenchment and Reform
Author: Eugenio F. Biagini
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521548861
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 508
Book Description
In common with republicanism or socialism in continental Europe, Liberalism in nineteenth-century Britain was a mass movement. By focussing on the period between the 1860s and the 1880s, this book sets out to explain why and how that happened, and to examine the people who supported it, their beliefs, and the way in which the latter related to one another and to reality. Popular suport for the Liberal party was not irrational in either its objectives or its motivations: on the contrary, its dissemination was due to the fact that the programme of reforms proposed by the party leaders offered convincing solutions to some of the problems perceived as being the most urgent at the time. This is a revealing, innovative synthesis of the history of popular support for the Liberal party, which emphasises the extent to which Liberalism stood in the common heritage of European and American democracy.

The Politics of Patriotism
Author: Jonathan Parry
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139459783
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 41
Book Description
Between the 1830s and 1880s European problems had a profound impact on British politics. Jonathan Parry examines the effect on the British Liberal movement of the most significant of these, such as the 1848 Revolutions, the unification of Italy, the Franco-Prussian War and the Eastern Question, arguing that these European problems made patriotism a major political question: governments were judged by their success in promoting British interests abroad, but also by the purity, potency and 'Englishness' of the political values they represented. This volume makes a major contribution towards understanding three important aspects of nineteenth-century British history: British attitudes to Europe, contemporary notions of national identity, and the nature and dynamic of British Liberalism. Setting foreign and domestic policy discussions in a patriotic framework, Parry offers an analysis of the ideas that influenced the Liberal political coalition and the turning-points affecting its vigour and unity as a political movement.

Computing Parliamentary History
Author: John A. Phillips
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 158
Book Description
Computing techniques are increasingly being used to examine afresh key historical events. This collection of papers shows how they have been applied to four important political and parliamentary events in nineteenth-century Britain; the hitherto little-studied 1835 Municipal Corporation Act, which proved a watershed in the development of political parties; the well-known repeal of the Corn Laws; the equally famous fight for Home Rule for Ireland; and the development of parliamentary collective responsibility for ministers of the Crown. It also describes and analyses the implications of a vast new database of unofficial late eighteenth-century division lists for the House of Commons.
