The numerous observational indicators of instability in the radiatively-driven winds of hot stars are review briefly, followed by a summary of the present theoretical understanding of the linear instability of such winds. This provides the motivation for the hydrodynamic simulation, the major thrust of the paper. A serious approximation that must be made in order to reduce the cost of the simulations to a reasonable level--the absorption approximation for the radiation force--is discussed in some detail. The hydrodynamic methods are described briefly, and then the computational results for winds models computed in the absorption approximation are discussed. The most notable results pertain to the critical nature of the ratio v{sub th}/a of the intrinsic line width to the sound speed. When this ratio is large, only a negligible wind results; when the ratio is small, the wind executes permanent self-excited oscillations; in an intermediate range the wind is globally stable, but acts as a powerful wave amplifier. The morphology of the oscillations--strong rarefactions and reverse shocks--is described and related to Abbott's linear theory, and the possible connection to observations is mentioned. 30 refs.

On April 28 1986 Cornelis de Jager reached the age of 65 years. On April 30 he officially retired from the University of Utrecht where he has held a Chair for Stellar Astrophysics, later changed into Space Physics, since 1958. Cees de Jager, as he prefers to be called by his friends, has had an active and successful life in science. His interest in astronomy was raised by his father under the clear skies of Celebes (Indonesia). He started a study in physics and astronomy as a student of the late M. Minnaert in Utrecht during World War II. When in 1943 the occupying forces recruited students who did not want to sign the declaration of loyalty for their war-efforts, Cees and three fellow students went into hiding at the Observatory in Utrecht. During this very "quiet" period van de Hulst developed the theory of the 21 em radiation of neutral hydrogen and de Jager started the observations of variable stars in the pitch dark nights of a country at war. The study of Beta Cepheids rapid ly awoke his interest which was kept throughout the years. In 1958 he organized an international campaign to observe 12 Lac spectroscopically and photometrically, which was a great success.

This specialized workshop was conceived during the workshop on "Non isotropic and Variable Outflows from Stars", which was held at the Space Telescope Science Institute in October, 1991. At that meeting, the four of us collectively decided that the time was ripe for an even more focussed discussion of the basic issues in the area of hot-star wind instability and its observable manifestations. Not that the big problems have been solved! Rather, we are currently in a phase of rapid development, both with regard to the models and to the observations. The key issue at this new workshop would be to decide how the time-dependent structures observed in hot-star winds (e. g. , NACs, DACs, blobs, clumps, filaments, shells, puffs, jets, etc. ) relate to radiative and other instabilities. Further questions concern the role of turbulence and the nature of its driver, and the effect of stellar rotation, pulsation, and magnetic fields on time-dependent phenomena in hot-star winds. Of no less importance is the impact of stellar wind variability on the derivation of mass-loss rates, on stellar evolution, and on momentum/energy deposition in the interstellar medium. To attain our goal of maximum confrontation (in the positive sense!) we decided: (1) to limit the workshop to the observers and theoreticians most active in this field in the world; (2) to insist that virtually all participants present a talk, thereby avoiding the distraction of poster sessions; and (3) to allocate approximately half of the allotted time to discussion.

We present three numerical models of accretion from radiation driven stellar winds onto compact objects in massive X-ray binary systems. The wind is given a velocity profile consistent with a radiatively driven wind, and a 'negative mass' gravitational potential is derived from this profile to represent the wind driving force in the hydrodynamic equations. An X-ray heating model is used which determines the X-ray heating time from the Compton heating time and the known steady state energies for optically thin gas illuminated by X-rays. This allows X-ray heating to be included in the hydrodynamic equations. The X-ray luminosity is held proportional to the accretion rate, assuming that the gravitational potential energy released is equivalent to 10% of the infalling rest-mass energy. A two-dimensional Eulerian computer code is used to solve the equations of motion. Model estimates of the ionization structure, accretion rates and flow characteristics, and the effects of thermal instabilities are discussed. The impact of the X-ray radiation on the wind driving force is demonstrated. Results indicate a possible mechanism for slow X-ray flares, such as observed in 4U1700-37.
