Book Description
Excerpt from The ABC of Musical Theory: With Numerous Original and Selected Questions and Exercises Tee following pages were primarily intended to provide a series of graduated questions and exercises covering, as far as possible, the whole field of what is commonly known as Musical Theory, or the Rudiments of Music and it was further intended that the work might be used in connection with any standard text-book. In dealing, however, with the more difficult parts of the subject, such as Syncopation, Trans position, the C clef in various positions, Determining the Key of given passages, and other similar questions which often puzzle the beginner, the author found that most of the text-books on Musical Theory gave less information than the ordinary student needed. It was therefore deemed advisable to include a concise summary of the essential Rudi ments of Music, which might serve either for instruction, for revision, or for reference. It is hoped that the teacher who may use this little work with his pupils will find his labours lightened, and that the questions and exercises are sufficiently varied and comprehensive to enable the student to understand the subject thoroughly, and to prepare for any of the usual examinations. Book Description
Excerpt from The Rudiments of Harmony: With Progressive Exercises and Appendix Being addressed to beginners, its explanations are all dogmatical; no argu ments are advanced to justify any views of the subject which are set forth since such a style of teaching would perplex the unpractised attention of a pupil and ample vindication of all that is here stated is to be found in books fitted rather for studied musicians than for mere learners. The book contains nothing new in theory but it differs in arrangement from works that have already appeared, according as practice has led me to differ in teaching, from the course pursued in any of these works; its chief pretensions are in the endeavour to state first principles distinctly, and to remove discrepancies between the laws of early theorists and the practice of modern composers. To facilitate reference, each chapter contains all that is said upon the branch of the subject therein treated; though the course of study will render it necessary to pass to some later chapters before concluding earlier ones. Thus, in the chapter on Intervals, it is not desirable to read of Intervals beyond the Octave, until the student have advanced to the chapter on Suspensions, in which the employment of the interval of the 9th is first noticed - in the chapter on Keys and Scales, it is not desirable to read of the Minor Key until the Student have written exercises of common chords in the Major Key; or to read of the chromatic scale, until he have advanced to the treatment of chromatic chords; &c. The order in which the book should first be read, is indicated in the Table of Contents, where the several divisions of the subject are progressively ranged according to the succession in which they should be studied. Book Description
Excerpt from The Rudiments of Music and Elementary Harmony: With Test Papers In Part II., which treats of Harmony, the author does not attempt to do more than touch the fringe of a very wide subject. A careful study of those pages which treat of the elementary principles of chord progression, of cadences, of natural modulation and of melody will, however, do much to develop and expand what is often termed Musical Instinct.
