Book Description
Effects of Shot-peening on High Cycle Fretting Fatigue behavior of Ti-6Al-4V were investigated. Experiments were performed with 6.35 mm thick specimens which provided S/N curves. After the tests, it was observed that the specimens failed near the trailing edge of contact. Scanning Electron Microscopy showed that cracks initiated on the contact surface for 6.35 mm, and at the depth of specimen ranging from 200 to 300 microns for 3.81 mm thick specimens. Initial crack orientation was around 37 and 42 degrees respectively for 6.35 and 3.81 mm thicknesses. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was conducted, and using FEA results, Smith-Watson-Topper, Findley, Shear Stress Range and Modified Shear Stress Range parameters were evaluated. Stress relaxation was observed after the failure of the specimens, and evaluations were repeated for different percentages of stress relaxation. Based on specific assumptions about stress relaxation. Modified Shear Stress range parameter was determined to be the only appropriate fatigue parameter that could meet all the required conditions for shot-peened fretting fatigue specimens. Also thickness effects on shot-peened specimens were investigated and discussed in this study.

Book Description
Shot-peened titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V and nickel-based super alloy IN100 were subjected to plain and fretting fatigue under cylinder-on-flat contact condition at room temperature. Measurement of compressive residual surface stress from shot-peening before and after fretting showed relaxation, which was significant in IN100 and near the contact surface. The fretting fatigue life of IN100 did not improve significantly due to shot-peening, while there was considerable improvement for Ti-6Al-4V and relatively less relaxation of the residual surface stress. Further, fretting had a relatively more detrimental effect on the fatigue performance of Ti-6Al-4V than in the case of IN100. A critical plane-based fatigue crack initiation model, a modified shear stress range parameter, was computed from finite element analysis for two levels of residual surface stress relaxation: no relaxation and complete relaxation. This analysis suggested that not only crack initiation but also propagation should be considered to characterize fretting fatigue behavior of shot-peened specimens; however, it showed an appropriate trend with the measured fretting fatigue life and agreement with several other experimental observations.

Book Description
A study of the fretting fatigue process in sheet specimens of Ti-6Al-4V alloy has been carried out. In the fretting experiments two fretting pads, also of Ti-6Al-4V, were clamped to the fatigue specimen by a calibrated proving ring. In the experiments the fretting pressure and the fatigue stress amplitude were varied. Specimens in the as-received condition as well as shot-peened specimens were tested to study the effect of surface condition on resistance to fretting. An approximate analysis of the shear transfer process was developed, and predictions are compared with the measured size of the fretting scars. The fatigue results of this investigation are discussed in terms of test variables as well as the predictions of the approximate theoretical treatment.

Book Description
Fretting fatigue studies were conducted on Ti-6Al-4V and 7075-T6 aluminum specimens cycled in axial fatigue loading at a fatigue ratio (R) of 0. 1. Fatigue loading was applied at 30 Hz in a laboratory environment with the fatigue specimen loaded in fatigue and fretting applied to the specimen central section through a fretting pad made of the same material as the specimen. Tests were conducted at various maximum loads and normal pressures.

Book Description
The fatigue strength of three shot-peened aluminum alloys (Al 7075-T651, Al 2024-T351 and Al 2014-T6) and a titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) was measured to determine the differences in shot peening quality from three vendors that were given the same shot peening parameters. Shot peening produces surface roughness, a cold-worked layer and, most importantly, a residual stress layer that resists the propagation of fatigue cracks. Significant vendor-to-vendor differences in fatigue properties were found, with Vendor 1 giving the greatest fatigue lifetimes.
