Quality in Laboratory Hemostasis and Thrombosis Second Edition Edited by Steve Kitchen, Clinical Scientist, Sheffield Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre, Royal Hallamshire Hospital and Scientific Director, UK National External Quality Assessment Scheme (FQAS) for Blood Coagulation, Scientific Director, WHO and WFH International External Quality Assessment Programs for Blood Coagulation, Sheffield, UK John D Olson, Professor and Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs, Department of Pathology, University of Texas Health Sciences Centre, San Antonio, Texas, USA F. Eric Preston, Emeritus Professsor of Haematology, University of Sheffield and Director, WHO and WFH International External Quality Assessment Programs for Blood Coagulations, Sheffield, UK The hemostasis laboratory has a vital role in the diagnosis and management of patients with familial and acquired hemorrhagic and thrombotic disorders. Rapid changes in the number and complexity of tests in this discipline have presented challenges for laboratories, as they develop quality programs for the oversight of this testing. Quality in Laboratory Hemostasis and Thrombosis has been completely revised and updated to reflect the changing process of managing quality. The second edition provides information on all aspects of testing, from pre-analytic to analytic and result reporting, in addition to external quality assurance. Chapters throughout the book include the development of global guidelines for methods, as well as the preparation of international standard plasmas and reagents. Designed to capture the elements of quality at all levels of the practice of laboratory hemostasis and thrombosis, this book will guide the reader through the development of a quality program to support all activities in the hemostasis laboratory, both simple and complex. Book Description
"Over the last decades, major progress has been made in quality assurance of hemostatic laboratory assays. This book will be an indispensable part of every hemostasis laboratory, where, given its hands-on nature, it will rarely sit to get dusty on the shelves." —Frits R. Rosendaal, Leiden University Medical Center The hemostasis laboratory has a vital role in the diagnosis and management of patients with familial and acquired hemorrhagic and thrombotic disorders. Its role in the monitoring traditional anticoagulant therapy as well as therapy using new anticoagulants presents new challenges to the laboratory. Quality in Laboratory Hemostasis and Thrombosis not only addresses these important issues, but also covers international guidelines for testing, the development of international standard materials, management of hemostasis testing from the laboratory to the point of care as well as molecular genetic testing. Designed as a guide for all those working in hemostasis laboratories, this book details a quality program that, when put into place, will help to improve standards in testing. All of the authors are internationally recognised for their work in hemostasis and thrombosis. Using their experience, they provide information on standards, equipment and methods that will guide the development of a quality program to support all activities in the hemostasis laboratory.

Book Description
The first edition of this manual appeared in 1992 and was entitled ECAT Assay Procedures. It was the result of a unique cooperation between experts brought together by the European Concerted Action on Thrombosis and Disabilities (ECAT). The Concerted Action was at that time under the auspices of the Commission of the European Union. The second edition, like the first edition, deals with diagnostic tests within the field of thrombosis. However, the second edition has a broader scope because it is no longer limited by the frontiers of ECAT. Experts allover the world, in and outside ECAT, have contributed to this edition. The editors are very grateful for their contributions. The need for a new edition is obvious. Since 1992 new assays have been introduced for research, diagnosis, and therapy of thrombosis; for other assays improvements have been suggested, while a few others became redundant. The editors waived the radioimmunoassays of ~-thrombog1obulin and platelet factor 4 due to the fact that the kits required for these assays are rarely, or no longer, available. Also the PAI-1 activity assay was waived as it is liable to many inconsistencies and to large variations. A list of names and addresses of manufacturers marketing the kits and reagents has been compiled, together with a list of the recommended nomenclature of quantities in thrombosis and haemostasis, in order to facilitate the use of the updated version. These lists have been carefully compiled by Johannes J. Sidelmann, PhD, Department of Clinical Biochemistry in Esbjerg, Denmark.

Book Description
A practical guide to laboratory diagnosis and treatment of hemostatic disorders. This concise book distils the most clinically up-to-date information on thrombotic and bleeding disorders, including the latest treatment strategies, for key conditions and diseases. Essential Guide to Blood Coagulation covers both the stable and the acute stages of hereditary and acquired bleeding and thrombotic disorders. Faced with a bleeding patient, it may be difficult to determine whether blood loss is due to a local factor, or an underlying hemostatic defect. There are a range of laboratory tests which can be performed to identify the cause of bleeding in a patient. This book highlights the tests that can be used in the laboratory to aid diagnosis. Essential Guide to Blood Coagulation has been updated to include the new anticoagulants and now has a dedicated chapter on antiplatelet drugs. This invaluable guide will help all those treating patients to expand their knowledge of hemostatic disorders. Book Description
A Doody's Core Title 2012 Each day pathologists are faced with ordering laboratory tests with which they are unfamiliar. An incorrectly ordered test or error in interpreting test results can lead to mistakes that compromise patient safety. Coagulation Disorders is designed to show clinical pathologists, lab managers, medical technologists, and residents how to avoid common errors in test selection and result interpretation in diagnostic coagulation. Utilizing a case-based approach, each chapter features a concise overview of a major diagnosis, with multiple illustrative cases, and then a list of recommended standards of care pertinent to the problem. Just as it is essential for the practitioner in the diagnosis of bleeding and thrombotic disorders to know the appropriate course of action to establish a diagnosis or to appropriately treat a patient, it is equally essential to also know what not to do. Avoiding the mistakes is a critical first step to optimizing patient outcome and maximizing patient safety. Features of Coagulation Disorders include: An emphasis on identifying established, evidence-based standards in coagulation testing Actual case illustrations of commonly seen errors as well as the result of those errors on patient outcome and laboratory management Examples of errors which compromise patient safety across all major areas of laboratory medicine Pocket-sized for portability About the Series A key issue for every laboratory and individual laboratory practitioner is the assessment of risk and a current working knowledge of the standards of care established for diagnostic testing via guidelines, major studies and trials. The Diagnostic Standards of Care series presents common errors associated with diagnoses in clinical pathology, using case examples to illustrate effective analysis based on current evidence and standards. In addition to being practical diagnostic guides, each volume demonstrates the use of quality assurance and the role of the pathologist in ensuring quality and patient safety.

Book Description
Coagulation testing is the basis for the diagnosis of bleeding and thrombotic disorders, as well as the mainstay of anticoagulant monitoring and management. This handbook provides practical information and guidance on topics relevant to directing a coagulation laboratory, filling a void in the literature. Since the first edition, all chapters have been updated and an entirely new chapter is included on pharmacogenomics and pharmacogenetics. The book will aid pathologists, clinical laboratory scientists and other physicians serving as laboratory directors to understand and carry out their responsibilities. It will also assist residents and fellows in learning the basics of coagulation testing and serve as a useful day-to-day reference for coagulation laboratory supervisors, technologists, and technicians. Finally, clinicians may find aspects of the book helpful in understanding the role of the coagulation laboratory in patient evaluation and monitoring.
