The general objective of this study was to supplement through data analysis the development of a quality assessment protocol for post-mountain pine beetle (MPB) wood that is consistent with standard North American procedures for testing and evaluating commercial structural lumber. The specific data analysis objectives were to determine the usefulness and limitations of existing data collected in past pan-Canadian cross sectional studies and how they may be used to assist in developing regional longitudinal programs. The second objective was to extract existing data on MPB-relevant characteristics from industry databases relevant to their frequency, and severity relative to grade rules. The techniques developed in this analysis are expected to form part of the evaluation framework of the quality assessment protocol.--Document.

The objective of this study is to develop a protocol for evaluating and responding to potential strength-reducing characteristics that develop in lumber from stands following a regional catastrophic event. This new protocol is intended to be distinct from the standardized lumber testing programs that are in place to support the development of structural design values. Under this two-year project, a general protocol has been drafted and a limited pilot study was undertaken to demonstrate its efficacy by using shake in post mountain pine beetle (MPB)-killed lodgepole pine lumber as an example. This protocol provides guidance on the identification of suitable characteristics for study, the design of an exploratory survey for assessing frequency of appearance, the approach for collecting samples for strength testing, the analysis of the test results, and, if necessary, the development of supplementary grading rules to respond to possible impacts to the lumber strength from these characteristics.--Document.

This study is part of a series of research papers that explore the biological, social, and economic aspects of British Columbia's mountain pine beetle epidemic. This document reports on a project conducted to determine the impact of using mountain pine beetle (MPB)-attacked wood on plywood manufacturing processes and to implement the optimum processing parameters in mill production in order to increase value recovery and productivity. The specific objectives of the project were to investigate and quantify the effect of beetle-wood veneer on veneer visual and stress grading; the efffect of beetle-wood veneer on gluing, panel lay-up and gluebond performance; the effect of beetle-wood veneer on the plywood hot pressing process and resulting panel quality, stiffness, and strength; and the costs and benefits of adjusting manufacturing processes in a mill trial that transfers the technology.--Includes text from document.
