Through a richly detailed account of the genesis, flowering, and decline of the Puritan ideal of a church of the elect in England and America, Professor Morgan offers an important reinterpretation of a pivotal era in New England history. Historians have generally supposed that the main outlines of the Puritan church were determined in England and Holland and transplanted to the new world. The author convincingly suggests, instead, that the distinguishing characteristic of the New England churches--the ideal of a church composed exclusively of true and tested saints--developed fully only in the 1630's and 1640's, some time after the first settlers arrived in New England. He also examines the influence of the Separatist colony at Plymouth on the later settlers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and follows the difficulties created by a definition of the religious community so selective that the New England churches nearly expired for lack of saints to fill them.

In these days of spiritual ignorance in the country and doctrinal laxity in the church, many Anglicans look back to former times with a certain degree of wistfulness. One date lingers in the collective Anglican memory as suggestive of a golden era: 1662. Yet 1662 was not a good year for those to whom the gospel and a good conscience were more precious than the institutional church. Hundreds of 'evangelical' puritan ministers were forced to leave the Church of England. Persecution of "dissenters" such as Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, and John Owen continued for a quarter of a century as they were banned from preaching and their like-minded congregations forbidden to meet. This study examines the reasons for the Great Ejection and Persecution, and the things modern day Anglicans and Free Churches can learn from these easily neglected events. Lee Gatiss is Associate Minister of St. Helen's, Bishopsgate in the City of London and Editor of The Theologian: The Internet Journal for Integrated Theology at www.theologian.org.uk. He was a prophet of the movement for free national education, and, holding that a collection of books is the true university, a prophet of the movement for free libraries of public endowment. The writer of a good book, the teacher of youth, the guardian of a library, he viewed as members of the true clerisy of a nation, more diligent for the general welfare than the hired parson, pledged to a particular set of opinions and droning out his dole on one day in seven to earn his state wages. " So all the land would be soon better civilised," and those who receive the free gift of education might reasonably be required not " to gad far out of their own country," but continue there, thankful for what they had received, bestowing it on others as need arose, without soaring above the rank in which they were born. Education, as Milton conceived it, should be not merely literary; it should be also technical; every boy should be taught an honest trade. And why should not worthy teachers of religion arise from among such cultivated craftsmen? Let Christians but know their own dignity, their liberty, their adoption, their spiritual priesthood, "whereby they have all equally access to any ministerial function, whenever called by their own abilities and the Church, though they never came near commencement or university," let them but know their true prerogatives, and with liberty a new and noble vigour will be infused throughout the whole spiritual life of the country.
