Book Description
Excerpt from Collections of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Vol. 1 One of the manifestations of the general revival of interest in American history, so noticeable during the past fifteen or eighteen years, has been the large and ever-increasing demand for materials for the study of local and sectional history. In the case of this Society, the result has been an almost complete exhaustion of the stock of the first ten volumes of Wisconsin Historical Collections - indeed, it has been many years since any copies of some of its volumes could be supplied. The recent rapid increase in the number of public and school libraries throughout the State, and the marked improvement in the methods and strength of the older of these institutions, together with the greater attention now paid by the general public to the study of Western history, have appeared to necessitate the republishing of these early and rare volumes. The demand for their reprinting, from the teachers and librarians of the State, has of late been so persistent that the Legislature of 1903 made the necessary provisions therefor. They will accordingly be republished at the rate of two volumes a year. In considering the matter of a second edition, the first impulse was, by careful re-editing to bring the volumes up to date, both in the matter of eliminating the undesirable material and in correcting other matter concerning which there is now more complete information. In 1855, when volume i was issued, the study of Western history was in its infancy. The editor, Dr. Lyman Copoland Draper, was then new to the West, and there were few others who had made scholarly researches into its historical sources. Book Description
Excerpt from Collections of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Vol. 7 Four years elapsed between the publication of volumes vi and vii of the Collections, during which the Society made broad strides in growth of Library, in extension of its usefulness to scholars and the general public, and in spread of reputation in the world of letters. The Society had emerged from the stage of experiment; the institution appeared now to be well grounded in popular favor, and reasonably certain to at least keep pace with the development of the Commonwealth. The Annual Reports of the Executive Committee, covering the years 1873-76, strike more stoutly than their predecessors the note of confidence, and assume a tone of dignity more in accordance with the improved situation. It is curious, thirty-odd years later, when the Society occupies a position probably but faintly foreshadowed even in Dr. Draper's optimistic vision, to find that the Nineteenth to the Twenty-second Annual Reports call as vigorously as those of our own day, although equally in vain, for a considerable private endowment to piece out the State appropriation; and that the cry for more space in which to accommodate the rapidly-increasing Library, was as familiar then as now. Despite what successes may await us, it is probable that, like most educational institutions, we shall always be more or less embarrassed from lack of funds adequate for meeting our ever-widening opportunities for public service; and so long as the Library continues its growth, which we trust will be of cumulative ratio, the question of storage will never be far removed. There are several notable papers in volume vii, giving to it a high average of interest and value. John Gilmary Shea's "Discovery of the Mississippi" was for its time an excellent piece of basic work, bringing to light much that was then new to Western history. Joseph Tasse, in his "Memoir of Charles de Langlade," admirably commingled material obtained from Draper's famous interview with Angustin Grignon (in our volume iii), and results of his own investigations in Canadian and Paris archives. Book Description
Excerpt from Annotated Catalogue of Newspaper Files in the Library of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin The first edition of the Annotated Catalogue o Newspaper Files in the Wisconsin State Historical Library was published in 1898, and compiled by the late Emma Helen Blair, then a member of the staff. In the intervening fourteen years, the Library's files have greatly increased in number of volumes and in geographical range; a second edition has therefore become necessary. In its preparation, the matter published in the first edition has been used as a basis; but in the effort to bring the new volume down to date, to include new files, and to introduce fresh data in the historical notes, thousands of changes have been made. The alphabetization, typography, and make-up of the present volume are also quite different from the former; and in these respects at least, there has been marked improvement both in appearance and in facility of consultation. Explanation seems necessary regarding the newly-adopted alphabetical arrangement. The classification by states and cities is obvious; the order of titles under each city, however, may at first seem eccentric. But the word in the title which is most commonly used or is more descriptive, has been chosen as the one determining the alphabetical position - not as commonly done, the first word in the title. This selected word (which in the Library of Congress Check List of Newspapers whose style we have followed in this particular, is called the "surname" of the paper) has been printed in small capitals, thus: 'Labor Advocate," 'Alabama Watchman," "National Democrat." The following descriptive title-words have, among many others, been selected as descriptive surnames: "Labor," "social," 'socialist," "commercial," "industrial," "mercantile," "workmen's," "co-operative," "religious," "woman's," "dramatic," "Christian," "union," "united" - also the names of trades, professions, denominations, and nationalities.
