Book Description
Excerpt from Homespun, Vol. 3: May 1928 As nearly as I can remember, the next work of Conrad's I read was that group of short stories in the volume, Youth. The first of these, Youth, is not really a short Story; it is a sketch done in glowing colors. It is an expression of the universal glamor of youth and is considered quite a literary masterpiece, I understand. In this volume, though, I think my favorite was Heart of Dark ness. This is the account of an expedition up the Congo, based on an actual experience in Conrad's life. It is told through thewords of that strange philosopher, Marlow, whom Conrad used in a number of his books as a means of giving the reader a more intimate impression of the things he had to tell. Heart of Darkness has an uncanny mood all its own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Town Talk, Vol. 19: The Pacific Weekly; February 4, 1911 If you had happened to maintain an interest in this by no means extraordinary proceeding. You would have noticed that the bartender took down a bottle and enriched a small wine glass with its ruddy contents, that the dapper young man held it before the light for the gratification of his eye, swept it slowly before his face for the titillation of his sense of smell and then tilted it over his tongue for the propitiation of his palate. Then you would have watched the dapper young man bring the glass sharply down upon the polished mahogany and you would have heard him exclaim. Book Description
Excerpt from The Wellesley Prelude, Vol. 3: April 16, 1892 We who with difficulty drag ourselves to the class-room at nine o'clock, must pity our poor little French friends whose work begins at a quarter after seven in summer and an hour later in winter. Nor have they the relief of long vacations, for beside the rather short sum mer recess, they have only a few days at Christmas. We may expect to find the national charac ter reflected to some extent in the methods of public instruction, and the distinctly practical tendency of the French systems is exactly what we should look for. Book Description
Excerpt from The Morningside, Vol. 3: October 3, 1898 Yet, for all the crowd, there was one soldier in one of the front cars who seemed to have no share in the profuse chorus of farewell. He was a great, broad-shouldered fellow, with a shock of curly, light-brown hair, and a face good-natured, ruddy and rather full. He kept peering anxiously down the platform as if expecting some one. Then suddenly his face lighted Up with gratification. For a tall, dark young man, dressed neatly in blue serge, was edging his way swiftly through the crowd. Sweeping with his eyes the long line of faces in the cars he hastened up to where the friend he was seeking beckoned to him from the window.
