Book Description
Excerpt from Publications of the Catholic Truth Society, 1894, Vol. 15 Here we may remark, for the benefit of all those who find in these False Decretals a stumbling-block to their acceptance of Rome's supremacy, that nothing can be more at variance with all human experience than to suppose that a document which introduced a new system of government into the Church would have been accepted without a very careful examination of its authority by the faithful at large. Book Description
Excerpt from Publications of the Catholic Truth Society, 1895, Vol. 25 Here we have in the Missal five prayers, the T e z'gitur, the Memento Of the living, the Communi cantes, the Hanc zgz'tur, and the Quam oblatz'onem. In the new Book the first is expanded into a long prayer for the whole state Of the Church, for the King, the Council, all bishops, pastors, and curates, and the people under their charge. The words of the Missal, We humbly pray and beseech Thee to receive these gifts, these Offerings, these holy, unde filed sacrifices, are changed into We humbly beseech Thee most mercifully to receive these our prayers. The mention Of persons by name in the Memento is omitted; but there is a prayer for the congregation, the words Of the Missal, for whom we offer unto Thee, or who are Offering unto Thee, the sacrifice Of praise, being changed into, which is here assembled in Thy Name to celebrate the corn memoration Of the most glorious Death Of Thy Son. The Communz'cantes no longer expresses the com munion Of saints, with a petition that we may be helped by their merits and prayers, but gives most high praise and hearty thanks for the wonderful grace and virtue, declared in all Thy saints, from the beginning Of the world, and prays that we may follow their example. After this, in the new Service, comes the commemoration Of the dead, placed by the revisers of the liturgy before the consecration. Book Description
Excerpt from Publications of the Catholic Truth Society, 1894, Vol. 19 Don Alfonso was a man of solid piety, most charitable to the poor and the sick, very gentle and considerate with his servants. Dona Beatriz also took all pains to bring up her children in the fear and love of God, devout to our Lady and the saints, and thus laid the foundations of the spiritual life of her daughter, who, before she was seven years old, would give alms out of the little money she had, and contrive to be alone that she might say her prayers, especially the Rosary. St. Teresa 1n playing with the other children would delight 1n imitating religious, and she tells us that she believed she wished to be a nun, but yet not so much as she wished to be a hermit or a martyr. Book Description
Excerpt from Publications of the Catholic Truth Society, 1900, Vol. 44 And next, let it be Observed that she has undertaken the more difficult work it is difficult certainly to enlighten the savage, to make him peaceable, Orderly, and self-denying to persuade him to dress like a European, to make him prefer a feather-bed to the heather or the cave, and to appreciate the comforts Of the fire-side and the tea-table but it is indefinitely more difficult, even with the supernatural powers given to the Church, to make the most refined, accomplished, amiable of men, chaste or humble to bring, not only his outward actions, but his thoughts, imaginations, and aims, into conformity to a law which is naturally dis tasteful to him. It is not wonderful, then, if the Church does not do so much in the Church's way, as the world does in the world's way. The world has nature as an ally, and the Church, on the whole, and as things are, has nature as an enemy.
