During the four years of war the Federal army lost by those directly killed in battle, men. It is probable that the loss on the Southern side was equal to this and possibly greater, but if this were true, even if this enormous number had to be doubled, it would still be less than the number of children under two years of age who are reported to have died in the four years between 1903 and 1907, for during that period there were reported the deaths of children under two years.
