Book Description
Cordless telecommunications has become the focus of much research effort across Europe during the last six years in response to the widely recognised need for a new generation of digital radio systems to meet demand in the European single market for telecommunications products and services. The culmination of this effort will be the definition of a standard for Digital European Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and a first release of this standard has now been agreed. However, the standard is necessarily complex in order to accommodate the range of services which DECT terminals will need to support and the implementation of the standard in future products and the deployment of DECT systems in different operational environments remain important areas for further research. This thesis deals with the principal aspects of this problem through the medium of simulation by exploring in detail those features of the air-interface which are concerned with the radio access and the teletraffic service support. The simulator, described in Chapter 2, is designed for maximum flexibility in investigating many possible combinations of radio propagation environment, equipment characteristics, traffic demands and geographical configuration of base stations and user terminals. In the following Chapter, the effects of modifications to a wide range of call parameters are systematically investigated and the results used to establish performance bounds for DECT systems. Chapters 4 and 5 represent the major contribution to knowledge generated by the research. In Chapter 4 the simulator is used to investigate how various service requirements can be met within the framework of the DECT standard. Particular attention is devoted to ISDN compatibility for different combinations of voice and data traffic including full and half rate speech coding, 'homogenous' and 'heterogeneous' connections and asymmetric traffic requirements such as FAX. On the basis of this study, Chapter 5 tackles the problem of optimising the algorithms which may be implemented in future DECT systems to maximise system capability in the many different operating.

Book Description
The mobile telecommunications industry is experiencing consider able growth at present and with the increased traffic capacities which these systems provide and falling equipment prices, it is expected to continue to grow throughout the 1990s. Projections of equipment costs indicate that even portable cellular handsets could come within the reach of many customers well before the end of the century. This will transform mobile communications services from a minority, high cost application into a mainstream telecommunications service. For both market and technical reasons it is likely that the distinction between cellular, Telepoint and paging services will decrease, and the provision of common hardware in the form of a Universal Personal Communicator will become increasingly feasible. 1987 Green Paper on The European Commission's June Telecommunications included the proposal to create a European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). This has resulted in a major reform of the European standards-setting process with the establishment of ETSI in March 1988 in Sophia-Antipolis, Nice, France. In the field of cordless telecommunications, ETSI has charged its Technical Sub-Committee RES 3 with producing the Digital European Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) standard by October 1991. In the meantime, the UK CT2 Common Air Interface (CAl) has been agreed by ETSI RES in March 1990 as the basis for an Interim European Telecommuni cations Standard (I-ETS) for Telepoint applications within Europe.

Book Description
This book provides the first overview of the service technologies available to telecoms operators working in a post-convergence world. Previous books have focused either on computer networks or on telecoms networks. This is the first to bring the two together and provide a single reference source for information that is currently only to be found in disparate journals, tool specifications and standards documents. In order to provide such broad coverage of the topic in a structured and logical fashion, the book is divided into 3 parts. The first part looks at the underlying network support for services and aims to explain the technology that makes the user-visible services possible. This section covers multimedia networking, both traditional (legacy) and future (softswitch) call processing, intelligent networks, the Internet, and Wireless networks. Part 2 deals with how these services may be analysed and managed. Chapters cover topics such as commercial issues, service management, quality of service, security, standards and APIs. Part 3 concludes the book by looking ahead at evolving technologies and more speculative possibilities, discussing the kinds of services that may be possible in the future and the technologies that will support them. * Focuses is on how the technology supports the services, rather than on technology for its own sake * Contributors drawn from both academia and industry (companies such as Marconi, BT, Telcordia, Cisco, Analysys) to give both theoretical and real-world perspectives * Unique singe-reference source for a wide range of material currently found only in disparate papers, specs and documentation * Covers brand new technologies such as JAIN, JTAPI, Parlay, IP, multimedia networking, active networks, WAP, wireless LANs, agent-based services, etc.

Book Description
Telecommunications Engineer's Reference Book maintains a balance between developments and established technology in telecommunications. This book consists of four parts. Part 1 introduces mathematical techniques that are required for the analysis of telecommunication systems. The physical environment of telecommunications and basic principles such as the teletraffic theory, electromagnetic waves, optics and vision, ionosphere and troposphere, and signals and noise are described in Part 2. Part 3 covers the political and regulatory environment of the telecommunications industry, telecommunication standards, open system interconnect reference model, multiple access techniques, and network management. The last part deliberates telecommunication applications that includes synchronous digital hierarchy, asynchronous transfer mode, integrated services digital network, switching systems, centrex, and call management. This publication is intended for practicing engineers, and as a supplementary text for undergraduate courses in telecommunications.
