Book Description
This study describes 656 species of bacteria, protists, and micro-metazoa occurring in the Simmelried, a three hectare-sized moorland near to the town of Constance, southern Germany. Each species is shown by an average of two colour micrographs. Further, the surface organization of most main groups and many ciliate species is demonstrated by scanning electron micrographs. The Simmelried formed after the last (Würm) ice-age, that is, about 15.000 years ago, when a regressing glacier tongue produced a terrain with water-filled depressions between streamlined boulder depositions. The investigations indicate that the 656 species documented represent only two thirds of the taxa actually present. Thus, a considerable diversity accumulated over 15.000 years, emphasizing the great distribution capacity of micro-organisms. On the other hand, some common species are lacking (e. g., the ciliate Colpidium colpoda, the euglenid Phacus pleuronectes, and rotifers of the genera Proales and Floscularia) and many undescribed species were discovered. While a mass of undescribed species is comprehensible in amoebas, flagellates and ciliates, which are poorly researched, this is surprising in weII-known groups, such as euglenids and chrysophytes. Thus, we must face the possibility that some of the undescribed species are regional or Iocal endemics. The high species richness, induding many undescribed species, suggests the Simmelried as a regional biodiversity centre worth to be protected by law.

Book Description
The present monograph is the fourth of six volumes which review the Hypotricha, a major group of the spirotrichs. The book is about the Gonostomatidae, the Kahliellidae, and some taxa of unknown position in the hypotrichs. Gonostomum was previously misclassified in the Oxytrichidae because its type species Gonostomum affine has basically an 18-cirri pattern, which is dominant in the oxytrichids. A new hypothesis, considering also molecular data, postulates that this 18-cirri pattern evolved in the last common ancestor of the hypotrichs and therefore it appears throughout the Hypotricha tree. The simple dorsal kinety pattern, composed of only three bipolar dorsal kineties, and gene sequence analyses strongly suggest that Gonostomum branches off rather early in the phylogenetic tree. Thus, the Gonostomatidae, previously synonymised with the oxytrichids, are reactivated to include the name-bearing type genus and other genera (e.g., Paragonostomum, Wallackia, Cladotricha) which have the characteristic gonostomatid oral apparatus. The Kahliellidae are a rather vague group mainly defined via the preservation of parts of the parental infraciliature. The kahliellids preliminary comprise, besides the name-bearing type genus Kahliella, genera such as Parakahliella and its African pendant Afrokahliella or the monotypic Engelmanniella. In total 68 species distributed in 21 genera and subgenera are revised. As in the previous volumes almost all morphological, morphogenetic, molecular, faunistic, and ecological data, scattered in almost 700 papers, are compiled so that the four volumes (Oxytrichidae, Urostyloidea, Amphisiellidae and Trachelostylidae, Gonostomatidae and Kahliellida) provide a detailed insight into the biology of almost 500 species of hypotrichs. The series is an up-to-date overview about this highly interesting taxon of spirotrichous ciliates mainly addressed to taxonomists, cell biologists, ecologists, molecular biologists, and practitioners.

Book Description
When I prepared the first German edition of this book in 1955, it was my intention to acquaint biologists in my country with the new and exciting results being obtained on the other side of theAtlantic Ocean (incl. the English Channel). In the meantime, especially after publication of the second German edition in 1968, Dr. Konrad F. Springer and many colleagues, too, suggested that I should prepare an English version. Though this was the exact opposite of my original intention, I finally agreed despite the risks involved. Since 1968 our knowledge in Protozoology increased considerably. Though I tried to concentrate the text as much as possible, an enlargement of up to pages 554 was unavoidable. Many figures have been changed, replaced and added. Altogether their number increased from 422 to 437. In my opinion, it is only a matter of time before the "true" protozoologists dis appear. There will be cell biologists, biochemists, geneticists and others working with certain Protozoa, but very few who are interested in the group as a whole, their morphological and physiological diversity, their various types of reproduction and their relationships to other groups of organisms. Even at the present time, the Society of Protozoologists, comprising more than thousand members, consists for the most part of specialists who concentrate their efforts specifically upon Chlamy domonas, Amoeba, Plasmodium, Tetrahymena or some other protozoans.
