Ce n'est pas par hasard que ce titre associe infirmiers et protestantisme, car les protestants, dès 1616, donc bien avant la révocation de l'édit de Nantes, s'étant vu refuser l'accès aux hôpitaux, durent se préoccuper très tôt de la formation des personnes attachées aux malades.¦Cette situation particulière perdura jusqu'à l'avènement de la IIIe République où elle s'inscrivit dans le schéma de laïcisation que devait parachever, en 1905, la loi de séparation de l'Eglise et de l'Etat.¦C'est l'occasion, pour l'auteur, d'analyser deux idéologies qui, dans la France du 19e siècle, se sont affrontées. La première privilégiant la foi admettait le recours au miracle et aux guérisseurs, la seconde mettant en avant science, compétence, hygiène et modernité, animait un mouvement laïc et plus spécifiquement protestant, héritier des valeurs de 1789 et de la philosophie des Lumières.¦La deuxième partie éclaire les positions, programmes et attitudes des différents ministères qui, en France, depuis plus d'un siècle, ont favorisé ou freiné la formation des infirmières.¦Une troisième partie, s'appuyant sur trois cents réponses d'anciennes infirmières diplômées de six maisons de santé protestantes, traite du déroulement de leurs carrières, sur une soixantaine d'années (1934-1994). Se dégage aussi un profil sociologique type des élèves infirmières, issu de l'étude systématique de 1800 dossiers allant de 1902 à 1992.¦
