This research project measures and raises the awareness level of the social concerns of black pain in relation to systemic poverty. As I surveyed the context in which I serve, I see the hurt and pain that black Americans experience from living in a system that keeps them held down. Many of them feel shame and embarrassment because of the conditions they live in. I raised the question in a teaching session. "Is there anyone here who knows somebody who is or has lived in poverty?" When they all raised their hand, I realize that this was a social concern that needed to be addressed. As I gave more thought to this social issue, I began thinking about the many friends and family members of my own who are or have lived in poverty. I also gave thought to the many sermons I have heard preached over the years, and I could not recall one that addressed this issue that is so prevalent in the African American community. Most African Americans who live in poverty is a result of being a victim to systemic racism. From the time the first slave ship touched the shores of America, black people have struggled to survive and that has caused various types of social concerns for our ethnic community. So, this research project was designed to raise awareness of prophetic preaching that foster social transformation relating to systemic poverty.

Enduring Truth argues that faithfulness to Scripture is the solution to a “crisis” among African American preaching. Though misinterpreting God’s Word is not restricted to one race or culture, author Aaron Lavender identifies three factors that have precipitated the decline of black preaching specifically: racial segregation, black liberation theology, and prosperity theology. The book’s first chapter recounts the history of the crisis, noting how discrimination in theological education led black ministers to liberal colleges and seminaries that prophetically confronted Jim Crow but taught the social gospel and other forms of theological error. Such schools ultimately were harmful to the spiritual health of black churches. Subsequent chapters discuss the role of biblical exegesis in preaching, develop a theology of preaching, and suggest preaching methods for the postmodern world. The narrative of Civil Rights often begins with the prophetic figure of Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1960s. City squares became a church, the body politic a congregation, and sermons a jeremiad of social change or so the story goes. In "A Pursued Justice," Kenyatta Gilbert instead traces the roots of King s call for justice to African American prophetic preaching that arose in an earlier moment of American history. In the wake of a failed Reconstruction period, widespread agricultural depression, and the rise of Jim Crow laws, and triggered by America s entry into World War I, a flood of southern Blacks move d from the South to the urban centers of the North. This Great Migration transformed northern Black churches and produced a new mode of preaching prophetic Black preaching which sought to address this brand new context. Black clerics such as Baptist pastor Reverend Adam Clayton Powell Sr., A.M.E. Bishop Reverdy Cassius Ransom, and A.M.E. Zion pastor Florence Spearing Randolph rose up within these congregations.
