Book Description

Book Description
Wave Propagation and Group Velocity contains papers on group velocity which were published during the First World War and are missing in many libraries. It introduces three different definitions of velocities: the group velocity of Lord Rayleigh, the signal velocity of Sommerfeld, and the velocity of energy transfer, which yields the rate of energy flow through a continuous wave and is strongly related to the characteristic impedance. These three velocities are identical for nonabsorbing media, but they differ considerably in an absorption band. Some examples are discussed in the last chapter dealing with guided waves, and many other cases of application of these definitions are quoted. These problems have come again into the foreground, in connection with the propagation of radio signals and radar. Reflection in the Heaviside layers requires a real knowledge of all these different definitions. Group velocity also plays a very important role in wave mechanics and corresponds to the speed of a particle. The present book should be very useful to physicists and radio engineers and should give them a good basis for new discussions and applications.

Book Description
Wave Propagation in Gas-Liquid Media (translated from the Russian 2nd Edition, published in 1990) presents the fundamentals of wave dynamics of two-phase gas-liquid systems. The study of multiphase systems is of growing importance in mechanics and thermophysics, particularly for applications in industrial, energy, power, chemical, and aerospace engineering. This book presents investigations of non-linear wave dynamics, as well as practical applications of wave motion. A system of non-stationary gas-dynamics to replace studies of conventional gas-dynamics is constructed by the book's contributors. Topics discussed include acoustics and shock waves in homogenous gas- and vapor-liquid mixtures, dynamics of gas and vapor bubbles, wave processes in gas-liquid systems, wave propagation in a liquid with vapor bubbles, wave processes on the interface of two media, wave flow of liquid films, and basic calculation formulas for wave dynamics of gas- and vapor-liquid media. The book will be a useful reference for thermophysicists, mechanical engineers, and aerospace engineers.

Book Description
Modern electrodynamics in different media is a wide branch of electrodynamics which combines the exact theory of electromagnetic fields in the presence of electric charges and currents with statistical description of these fields in gases, plasmas, liquids and solids; dielectrics, conductors and superconductors. It is widely used in physics and in other natural sciences (such as astrophysics and geophysics, biophysics, ecology and evolution of terrestrial climate), and in various technological applications (radio electronics, technology of artificial materials, laser-based technological processes, propagation of bunches of charges particles, linear and nonlinear electromagnetic waves, etc.). Electrodynamics of matter is based on the exact fundamental (microscopic) electrodynamics but is supplemented with specific descriptions of electromagnetic fields in various media using the methods of statistical physics, quantum mechanics, physics of condensed matter (including theory of superconductivity), physical kinetics and plasma physics. This book presents in one unique volume a systematic description of the main electrodynamic phenomena in matter: - A large variety of theoretical approaches used in describing various media - Numerous important manifestations of electrodynamics in matter (magnetic materials, superconductivity, magnetic hydrodynamics, holography, radiation in crystals, solitons, etc.) - A description of the applications used in different branches of physics and many other fields of natural sciences - Describes the whole complexity of electrodynamics in matter including material at different levels. - Oriented towards 3-4 year bachelors, masters, and PhD students, as well as lectures, and engineers and scientists working in the field. - The reader will need a basic knowledge of general physics, higher mathematics, classical mechanics and microscopic (fundamental) electrodynamics at the standard university level - All examples and problems are described in detail in the text to help the reader learn how to solve problems - Advanced problems are marked with one asterisk, and the most advanced ones with two asterisks. Some problems are recommended to be solved first, and are are marked by filled dots; they are more general and important or contain results used in other problems.

Book Description
One of the most important features of nonlinear systems with several degrees of freedom is the presence of internal resonances at certain relations between natural frequencies of different modes. This monograph is the first book devoted predominantly to internal resonances in different mechanical systems including those of practical importance. The main purpose is to consider the internal resonances from the general point of view and to elucidate their role in applied nonlinear dynamics by using an efficient approach based on introducing the complex representation of equations of motion (together with the multiple scale method). Considered here are autonomous and nonautonomous discrete two-degree-of-freedom systems, infinite chains of particles, and continuous systems, including circular rings and cylindrical shells. Specific attention is paid to the case of one-to-one internal resonance in systems with cubic nonlinearities. Steady-state and nonstationary regimes of motion, interaction of the internal and external resonances at forced oscillations, and bifurcations of steady-state modes and their stability are systematically studied.

Book Description
Since the concept was first proposed at the end of the 20th Century, metamaterials have been the subject of much research and discussion throughout the wave community. More than 10 years later, the number of related published articles is increasing significantly. On the one hand, this success can be attributed to dreams of new physical objects which are the consequences of the singular properties of metamaterials. Among them, we can consider the examples of perfect lensing and invisibility cloaking. On other hand, metamaterials also provide new tools for the design of well-known wave functions such as antennas for electromagnetic waves. The goal of this book is to propose an overview of the concept of metamaterials as a perspective on a new practical tool for wave study and engineering. This includes both the electromagnetic spectrum, from microwave to optics, and the field of acoustic waves. Contents 1. Overview of Microwave and Optical Metamaterial Technologies, Didier Lippens. 2. MetaLines: Transmission Line Approach for the Design of Metamaterial Devices, Bruno Sauviac. 3. Metamaterials for Non-Radiative Microwave Functions and Antennas, Divitha Seetharamdoo and Bruno Sauviac. 4. Toward New Prospects for Electromagnetic Compatibility, Divitha Seetharamdoo. 5. Dissipative Loss in Resonant Metamaterials, Philippe Tassin, Thomas Koschny, and Costas M. Soukoulis. 6. Transformation Optics and Antennas, André de Lustrac, Shah Nawaz Burokur and Paul-Henri Tichit. 7. Metamaterials for Control of Surface Electromagnetic and Liquid Waves, Sébastien Guenneau, Mohamed Farhat, Muamer Kadic, Stefan Enoch and Romain Quidant. 8. Classical Analog of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency, Philippe Tassin, Thomas Koschny and Costas M. Soukoulis.
