Le Conseil de l'Europe et notamment le Congrès ont toujours été sensibles aux problèmes posés par le tourisme en général, et par le tourisme doux, éducatif et culturel en particulier. Le Comité des Ministres du Conseil de l'Europe a défini à plusieurs reprises les lignes directrices pour la promotion du tourisme en tant que facteur économique dans les pays membres. Il a particulièrement attiré l'attention sur la nécessité de définir ces politiques dans la perspective d'un développement durable et respectueux de l'environnement, et conforme aux critères de la protection du patrimoine historique et culturel. Les collectivités locales et régionales ont été appelées à mettre en œuvre ces lignes directrices et se sont ralliées à ces critères afin de les appliquer dans leur propre politique. Ainsi, elles ont étudié dans le cadre du présent rapport les différents aspects de la promotion du tourisme durable et culturel, notamment par le lancement des itinéraires culturels en Europe. Une place importante a été réservée dans ce contexte aux nouveaux pays membres de l'Europe centrale et orientale en vue de les intégrer davantage dans les réseaux d'itinéraires paneuropéens.

Because of their biological diversity, they are also called "rainforests of the sea." Coral reefs are vital to the well being of millions of people. Coral reef managers and government officials trying to save their valuable national resources have turned to research on coral reefs for help. The research presented in this publication merits a great deal of notice because the output is useful for decision support and training tools in integrated coastal zone management (ICZM). The work on cost-effectiveness analysis has developed integrated economic and ecological models, relying extensively on fuzzy logic procedures to model impacts and effects of interventions within the reef environment. By contrast, the marine system valuation work provides economic valuations of coral reefs, demonstrating the use of different modeling methods and treating key policy issues within this context. From portrayals of African women’s bodies in early modern European travel accounts to the relation between celibacy and Indian nationalism to the fate of the Korean “comfort women” forced into prostitution by the occupying Japanese army during the Second World War, the essays collected in Bodies in Contact demonstrate how a focus on the body as a site of cultural encounter provides essential insights into world history.
