El mutismo selectivo es un trastorno grave de la conducta que se inicia en la infancia y cuya característica esencial es que los niños que lo presentan evitan o inhiben de manera persistente el habla en situaciones sociales que inicialmente son específicas y que progresivamente pueden irse generalizando hasta terminar en el mutismo total, es decir, en la evitación o inhibición del habla ante cualquier persona y en cualquier situación. En la mayoría de los casos, el comienzo de la inhibición del habla suele coincidir con la ocurrencia de un cambio más o menos abrupto y prolongado en el que los niños pasan de un medio conocido y seguro (el familiar) a otro desconocido e incierto (jardín de infancia, parvulario, escuela, ingreso hospitalario prolongado, cambio de lugar de residencia, etc.). Pese a la relevancia de este trastorno, el desconcierto que suele producir su diagnóstico y el desconocimiento que existe todavía sobre su evaluación y tratamiento justifican la publicación de esta obra.
