The very title, Profile of American Politics, suggests our bias toward the dynamic factors. Our approach emphasizes political, economic and moral factors without overlooking legal, constitutional, historical and other essential ingredients in politics. To reflect the depth and breadth of the American democratic heritage, we have drawn from a wide variety of sources past and present. We have ranged from the Federalist Papers to Reinhold Niebuhr, from de Tocqueville to Eric Johnston, from the Mayflower Compact to the Supreme Court decision against racial segregation in public schools. We have included the reflections of politicians and the observations of journalists as well as the writings of scholars. We believe student interest will be stimulated by our generous quota of contemporary essays which illustrate basic facets of the American political system. We believe that the student can best gain a sturdy appreciation for our democratic institutions by grappling with problems, events and personalities of the current political scene. Some thirty' essays were written after the advent of the Sputnik era. Along with the readings on contemporary issues we have included historic Supreme Court decisions and essays by the Founding Fathers. Our emphasis on the dynamic aspects of American government is further illustrated by our including four chapters rarely found in collections of this kind: Chapter 1: The American Character Chapter 12: The Press and Politics Chapter 13: Ethics and Politics Chapter 27: The Future of American Democracy In most books of readings in American Government, foreign policy receives scant attention. Because of the tremendous impact of international affairs on American politics and Government, we have devoted two full chapters to the formulation and substance of United States foreign policy. In addition to these special features, we have retained the traditional chapters, including one on state government and one on local government. Each of the twenty-seven chapters is introduced by a brief essay which provides a historical or conceptual backdrop for the essay's which follow. Each reading in turn is introduced by several provocative questions or a brief background statement. We have attempted to enhance reader interest and readability by style, format and editing, as well as by the careful selection of essays. We have included some thirty' cartoons and illustrations. Book Description
Lt. Governor Bill Ratliff is an engineer, a widely respected senator, and according to Caroline Kennedy he is “an inspiration to all who serve in government, and to all Americans.” Senator Ratliff, nicknamed “Obi Wan Kenobi” by his colleagues, was a revered and much loved leader in Texas for more than a decade. He singularly wrote the Texas Robin-Hood school finance law, a major Ethics reform law, a Texas tort reform law, and held a great disdain for narrow partisanship and politics. This is the inspirational story of a great man doing good work in a time when many are cynical about political leadership and government. His courageous stand on principle brought him to a showdown with powerful forces in the Bush White House and earned him the public vitriol of right-wing billionaires.

Book Description
How can political science help you understand the world you live in? Modern approaches to the study of politics analyze why Congress, the president, the courts, and other political actors do what they do. Learning to think critically about power, institutions, and rules helps citizens engage constructively in politics and the wider world around them and helps us systematically identify false claims, biases, and misconceptions. Analyzing American Democracy teaches students to think analytically by presenting current political science theories and research in answering the engaging, big questions facing American politics today. It serves as both an introduction to American politics and to the discipline of political science by reflecting the theoretical developments and empirical inquiry conducted by researchers. Every chapter highlights the most current research and discusses related public policy. It demonstrates for students how to think critically and analytically, bringing theoretical insight to contemporary American politics. More than just a comprehensive overview and description of how American politics works, Jon Bond and Kevin Smith demonstrate how politics can be studied systematically. Throughout the text, they introduce students to the insights gleaned from rational choice, behavioral, and biological approaches to politics. Understanding these three social scientific models and their applications helps students get the most out of their American government course and out of this text--they learn a way of thinking that they can use to make sense of future challenges facing the American polity. A number of features help aid comprehension and critical thinking: Key Questions at the start of every chapter frame the learning objectives and concepts "Thinking Analytically" boxes demonstrate how political scientists answer pressing questions about the American polity and model critical thinking "Applying the Frameworks" boxes show why theory is so important in making systematic sense of the political world "New Directions" boxes will highlight cutting edge research in political science to highlight some of the big contemporary questions the book addresses Tables, Figures, Charts, and Maps throughout present the empirical details of American politics, helping students gain quantitative literacy Top Ten Takeaway Points at the end of every chapter recap the most important points covered but also help students discern the general principles that make sense of the numerous factual details Key Terms are bolded in the text, defined in the margins, recapped at the end of the chapter, and compiled in a glossary, all to help insure that students can effortlessly master the vocabulary of American politics and political science in order to move on to the more important concepts. Book Description
Fixing American Politics: Solutions for the Media Age brings together original chapters from 34 noted scholars from two disciplines – political science and communication – asked to identify the most pressing problems facing the American people and how they can be solved. Authors address the questions succinctly and directly, with their favored solutions featured in chapter titles that exhort and inspire. The book gives the reader much to think about and debate. Should news outlets be funded with public money rather than by private enterprise? Are the new social media a boon or a bane to political elections? Is the American past dead, or is it living once again? Do churchgoers and environmentalists have anything to discuss? Is the FCC doing its job? Can political ads be made less toxic? Should Fox News be "cancelled?" Should cancel cultures be cancelled? Can we become more civil to one another and, if so, how? Fixing American Politics poses all the best questions ... and offers some concrete answers as well. This book is perfect for students, citizens, the media, and anyone concerned with contemporary challenges to civic life and discourse today.
