Book Description
"The identification of discrete resource units, whether they be called stocks, populations, migratory groups or management units, is critical to the effective management of our aquatic resources. Advances in techniques and equipment have been made in recent years in the area of such identifications. A workshop to review these advances was organized by the Panama City Laboratory of the Southeast Fisheries Center, National Marine Fisheries Service. It was held at the Miracle Mile Complex, Panama City Beach, Florida, Nov. 4-6, 1985. The major objective of the Stock Identification Workshop was to gain a more comprehensive understanding of stock identification problems and approaches to their solutions. The workshop was designed to give an opportunity to the participants to share information on methods of stock identification and to review their application to aquatic resources. The program format consisted of three sections--" Preface, paragraphs 1-2.

Book Description
"The Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) is one of five regional fishery research centers of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). In 1970, the NMFS was organized as a component of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the U.S. Department of Commerce. The Fisheries Science Centers provide scientific information required for decisions relating to the conservation and management of fishery resources, and the protection of fishery habitats, endangered and threatened species. In 1972, the NOAA Technical Memorandum series was established and the Southeast Fisheries Science Center began the publication of research reports. The purpose of this series is timely dissemination of the results of scientific research. The series also affords the SEFSC a means of publishing research results in greater depth and detail than is normally allowed by scientific journals, which usually have stringent length restrictions. To address the difficulties of identification and location of these publications, we present the following listing of SEFSC Technical Memoranda from number 1 (1972) to number 340 (1993). They are available from their originating laboratories or from the National Technical Information Service. A directory of these sources is provided on page 2"--Introduction

Book Description
Fish recruitment is a key process for maintaining sustainable fish populations. In the marine environment, fish recruitment is carried out in many different ways, all of which have different life history strategies. The objective of this book is to argue for greater linkages between basic and applied research on fisheries recruitment, and assessment and management of exploited fish stocks. Following an introductory chapter, this second edition of Fish Reproductive Biology is organized into 3 main sections: Biology, Population Dynamics and Recruitment Information Critical to Successful Assessment and Management Incorporation of Reproductive Biology and Recruitment Considerations into Management Advice and Strategies The authors collectively bring a wide range of diverse experience in areas of reproductive biology, fisheries oceanography, stock assessment, and management. Fully updated throughout, the book will be of great interest to a wide audience. It is useful as a textbook in graduate and undergraduate courses in fisheries biology, fisheries science, and fisheries resource management and will provide vital information for fish biologists, fisheries scientists and managers.

Book Description
Stock Identification Methods provides a comprehensive review of the various disciplines used to study the population structure of fishery resources. It represents the worldwide experience and perspectives of experts on each method, assembled through a working group of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea. The book is organized to foster interdisciplinary analyses and conclusions about stock structure, a crucial topic for fishery science and management. Technological advances have promoted the development of stock identification methods in many directions, resulting in a confusing variety of approaches. Based on central tenets of population biology and management needs, Stock Identification Methods offers a unified framework for understanding stock structure by promoting an understanding of the relative merits and sensitivities of each approach. * Describes eighteen distinct approaches to stock identification grouped into sections on life history traits, environmental signals, genetic analyses, and applied marks * Features experts' reviews of benchmark case studies, general protocols, and the strengths and weaknesses of each identification method * Reviews statistical techniques for exploring stock patterns, testing for differences among putative stocks, stock discrimination, and stock composition analysis * Focuses on the challenges of interpreting data and managing mixed-stock fisheries

Book Description
This volume, the proceedings of the Fourth International Symposium on Genetics in Aquaculture, builds on the foundations laid down at the first symposium, held in Galway, Ireland in 1982 (Aquaculture, Volume 33), as well as those laid down at the second, held in Davis, California, USA in 1985 (Genetics in Aquaculture II), and the third, held in Trondheim, Norway in 1988 (Genetics in Aquaculture III). It addresses specific problems and developments in this field, demonstrating the tremendous breadth of research activity as well as the complexity of issues in aquaculture genetics. This book will be of great value to aquaculturists, fisheries scientists and marine biologists. (The above-mentioned proceedings of the first three conferences are still available).
