Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the Meeting in Charleston, S. May 13-15, 1845: On the Religious Instruction of the Negroes, Together With the Report of the Committee, and the Address to the Public In March last, a few persons, considering the importance of a general and efficient attention to the Religious Instruction of our Negroes, met in conference on the subject: and believing that the end would be essentially promoted, by collecting and diffusing accurate information respecting the nature, extent, and results of the efforts known and understood to have been in progress; they addressed a Circular to a considerable number of gentlemen, interested in planting, in all parts of our State, requesting them to attend a meeting in Charleston, on the 13th May, in order to interchange information, and opinions, and to consult upon the proper use to be made of the facts which might thus be obtained. With a view to care and definiteness, they were also requested to furnish, in writing if convenient, and, if not, orally, replies to certain inquiries contained in the Circular. Book Description
In this revelatory and genuinely groundbreaking study, François Furstenberg sheds new light on the genesis of American identity. Immersing us in the publishing culture of the early nineteenth century, he shows us how the words of George Washington and others of his generation became America's sacred scripture and provided the foundation for a new civic culture, one whose reconciliation with slavery unleashed consequences that haunt us still. A dazzling work of scholarship from a brilliant young historian, In the Name of the Father is a major contribution to American social history.

All for Liberty
Author: Jeff Strickland
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108681786
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 291
Book Description
Jeff Strickland tells the powerful story of Nicholas Kelly, the enslaved craftsman who led the Charleston Workhouse Slave Rebellion, the largest slave revolt in the history of the antebellum American South. With two accomplices, some sledgehammers, and pickaxes, Nicholas risked his life and helped thirty-six fellow enslaved people escape the workhouse where they had been sent by their enslavers to be tortured. While Nat Turner, Gabriel Prosser, and Denmark Vesey remain the most recognizable rebels, the pivotal role of Nicholas Kelly is often forgotten. All for Liberty centers his rebellion as a decisive moment leading up to the secession of South Carolina from the United States in 1861. This compelling micro-history navigates between Nicholas's story and the Age of Atlantic Revolutions, while also considering the parallels between race and incarceration in the nineteenth century and in modern America. Never before has the story of Nicholas Kelly been so eloquently told.
