Pittsburgh once again proved to be an inviting city for magneticians. 1,118 participants registered for the 5th Joint MMM Intermag Conference. The 762 contributions were organized into 506 talks and 256 poster exhibits which demonstrated that we have out grown the Pittsburgh Hilton To accommodate the large number of posters in the space available required three poster sessions on three of the days. Magnetic recording still appears to fuel the great interest in magnetism. The Conference previewed a number of developments that indicate the potential of this technology. For example, with magnetoresistive heads, a remarkable recording density of 2 gigabits per square inch was reported. Fundamental interest in transport has been revived by the observation of giant magneto-resistance efforts; the reader should find many new and interesting topics in these Proceedings.
