Protides of the Biological Fluids contains the proceedings of the 23rd Colloquium on "Protides of the Biological Fluids" held in Brugge, Belgium in 1975. The discussions were organized around three themes: proteinase inhibitors, clinical evaluation of plasma protein patterns, and affinity chromatography. Comprised of 117 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of carcinofetal proteins, followed by an analysis of proteinase inhibition. These proceedings contain the papers presented at the Bayer-Symposium V which was held in Grosse Ledder on October 16-21, 1973 and which was simultaneously the Second International Research Conference on Proteinase Inhibitors. The cordial atmosphere, the frank discussions and the profitable exchange of ideas during the First International Research Conference on Proteinase Inhibitors which was held on November 4--6, 1970 in Munich were a stimulant for us to consider holding a Second Conference especially as the steadily increasing research activities in this and related fields called for a new assessment of recent efforts in proteinase inhibitor research. In the three years since the First Conference was held, this field has developed particularly in the areas of molecular aspects of protein-protein interactions and in the extension to inhibitors of nonserine proteinases and peptidases. In planning this meeting the Organizing Committee was faced with the problem of selecting a limited number of participants and we decided that it was appropriate and necessary to focus in detail on the chemistry of proteinase inhibitors, their interac tions with a variety of enzymes and also to invite more general papers to survey the physiological and clinical aspects of the subject which we felt would be of importance in the future.

The diversity and significance of recent research on the kallikrein-kinin system provided the impetus for this international conference, the purpose of which was the assessment of our knowledge and the development of a base from which to plan future research. Through the generous support of the Fogarty International Center and of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the Organizing Committee was able to bring together authorities in virtually every aspect of kinin research. The kallikrein-kinin field was divided into three major areas: A) Characterization and assays of components of the kallikrein-kinin systems; B) Interacting systems: Fibrinolysis, complement, coagulation, and prostaglandins; and C) Physiological, pathological, and clinical significance. Invited experts were instructed to present concise critical reviews along with any new data. Time was a)so provided for discussants to present relevant comments and data. Selected discussions accompany the keynote reports, and these comprise the short chapters.
