Weighting Evidence in Language and Literature
Author: Barron Brainerd
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 144265077X
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 362
Book Description
In recent years, there has been a tremendous development in the area of quantitative and statistical analysis of linguistic and literary data, generated, no doubt, by extensive advances in computer technology and their relatively easy availability to scholars. However, except for a few rather specialized examples, there has been no truly introductory text in statistics and quantitative analysis devoted to the needs of language scholars. This work was written especially to fill the gap. It introduces a mathematically naïve reader to those statistical tools which are applicable in modern quantitative text and language analysis, and does this in terms of simple examples dealing exclusively with language and literature. Exercises are included throughout.

Judgment Under Uncertainty
Author: Daniel Kahneman
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521284141
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 574
Book Description
Thirty-five chapters describe various judgmental heuristics and the biases they produce, not only in laboratory experiments, but in important social, medical, and political situations as well. Most review multiple studies or entire subareas rather than describing single experimental studies.

Weighing Evidence
Author: Glenn Shafer
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Reasoning (Psychology)
Languages : en
Pages : 69
Book Description
The assessment of probability on the basis of evidence is viewed as a thought experiment that yields an expression of degree of belief. Theories of subjective probability are viewed as tools or languages for analyzing evidence and expressing degree of belief. This article focuses on two probability languages: the classical Bayesian language and the language of belief functions. We describe and compare the semantics (i.e., the meaning of the scale) and the syntax (i.e., the formal calculus) of these languages. We also analyze the designs of thought experiments afforded by the two languages and discuss their implications. (Author).

A Mathematical Theory of Evidence
Author: Glenn Shafer

Book Description
Both in science and in practical affairs we reason by combining facts only inconclusively supported by evidence. Building on an abstract understanding of this process of combination, this book constructs a new theory of epistemic probability. The theory draws on the work of A. P. Dempster but diverges from Depster's viewpoint by identifying his "lower probabilities" as epistemic probabilities and taking his rule for combining "upper and lower probabilities" as fundamental. The book opens with a critique of the well-known Bayesian theory of epistemic probability. It then proceeds to develop an alternative to the additive set functions and the rule of conditioning of the Bayesian theory: set functions that need only be what Choquet called "monotone of order of infinity." and Dempster's rule for combining such set functions. This rule, together with the idea of "weights of evidence," leads to both an extensive new theory and a better understanding of the Bayesian theory. The book concludes with a brief treatment of statistical inference and a discussion of the limitations of epistemic probability. Appendices contain mathematical proofs, which are relatively elementary and seldom depend on mathematics more advanced that the binomial theorem.
