Private Education
Author: Geoffrey Walford
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 184714408X
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 258
Book Description
Private schools are central to the reproduction of social inequality. For example, whilst in the UK providing only about seven per cent of the school population, about half of the undergraduates at Oxford and Cambridge still come from the private sector. Private schools have long been associated with privilege and elitism. While this traditional elitist aspect to the private sector is still central, the private school sector is actually far more diverse that is usually acknowledged. It now includes many small schools and faith-based schools that may not offer the traditional advantages of the private sector but which provide a particular environment deemed desirable by parents. In spite of their educational and social importance, there has been very little academic research and writing on private schools. The proposed book will be the culmination of Professor Walford's research into private schools over the past twenty years.

Making Law for Families
Author: Mavis Maclean
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1847313183
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 224
Book Description
Making Law for Families is the result of a workshop organized by Mavis Maclean and held between May 26 and June 2,1999, at the international Institute for the Sociology of Law (IISL) in Onati, Spain. This book analyzes the concept of the family in the context of increasing challenges and questions created by multicultural societies in ever more complicated international and transnational legal contexts. How is the family defined across cultural and national divides? To what extent and under what conditions should any particular state intervene? The collected essays in this volume seek to answer these and other difficult questions through grounded empirical research and insightful appreciation of how political systems function in various countries. An underlying concern is to explore to what extent and under what terms will the family endure in the future as a basic unit of social management and control. This book is part of the OƱati International Series in Law and Society.

Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 246
Book Description
Marketization and privatization in compulsory education have spread around the globe. School choice is seen by many to be the panacea to develop the quality of schools and improve school systems worldwide. Additionally in many countries several types of private schools expand and change the school landscapes. The articles of the anthology analyse and discuss these changes in several countries and ask to what extent and in which ways school choice and the growth of private school play a role for education policies and education systems. Which political and civil society actors are active in formulating and promoting school choice and private schooling? And to what extent does the expansion of private schools and school choice address questions of educational inequality and social segregation.
