A partir de 1850 une reaction s'opere contre le romantisme sous des influences diverses parmi lesquelles on doit noter le mouvement scientifique Pasteur (1822-95), Berthelot (1827-1907), CI. Bernard (1813-78), certaines theories d'origine anglaise (Darwin, 1809-82) ou allemande (Hegel, 1770-1831), le reveil de l'esprit bourgeois et surtout le positivisme d'A. Comte (17981857). Ce dernier influence plus specialement trois grands ecrivains: Ste-Beuve, Renan, et Taine. Ste-Beuve (1804-69) qui doit egalement beaucoup au critique suisse Vinet (1797-1847) cherche dans ses Portraits (1824-37) a faire entrevoir l'ame de l'ecrivain a travers son uvre. Ses tendances realistes, precisees par le positivisme, aboutissent a Port-Royal (1840-62), aux Causeries du Lundi (1849-61) et aux Nouveaux Lundis (1861-9). Plus prudent que Taine, Ste-Beuve n'a pas erige la critique en science; il lui a pourtant conserve son "caractere d'art "; il reste, a ce jour, un de nos plus grands critiques litteraires. Renan (1823-92) a applique la methode positive aux etudes religieuses. D'une erudition extraordinaire, il donne dans son Histoire des langues semitiques (1857) et ses Origines du christianisme (1863-81) une uvre forte et admirable. Il s'eloigne pourtant du positivisme par ses speculations metaphysiques: Essais de morale et de critique (1860), Reforme intellectuelle et morale (1871), Dialogues...
