Book Description
Excerpt from Presbyterian Cook Book In compiling this book the committee has tried to profit by the kindly criticisms of the previous cook books. It has labored to maintain the high standard of the first books, and wherever possible to surpass them. In asking the public for the same generous patronage they have accorded us in the past, we feel we are giving in return a book that will make the culinary way clear to the new housekeeper, and solve many perplexing questions for the cook of more experience. We wish to thank our friends for their generosity in sup plying the hundreds of recipes with which the book is filled. Many, just as good have been reluctantly discarded, because they were duplicates. Some have been lost, as they were written in pencil, or on both sides of the paper. Some have been unsigned and could not be credited. But in every case we have tried to be as just as our friends were generous. The business public has been courteous and generous to us in the way of advertising and we are very grateful. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. Book Description
Excerpt from Cookery: Recipes by Women of First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church Different from all other recipes, this one necessitates no gathering in. One has only to look to the inner self where God has placed the ingredients. Mixing will take a lifetime, and must be stirred with perseverance. One yearning, seeking soul will hold to itself a heartful of love which will grant patience and kindness to all others. Add to this a lifetime of service in doing the things-1arge or small- that will make the world a better place in which to live. Mix freely with compas sion and forgiveness for all, being ever mindful that our own faults so often exceed those of our neighbor. Blend with an undying hope that nothing done for the good of others is in vain and mold together with the full faith that through joy and sorrow someone cares, that God the Creator still rules the universe and if we look to Him the day will be hastened when He rules each heart. Book Description
Published in 1874 in Troy, New York, during the post-Civil War charity cookbook boom, the Presbyterian Cook Book is a fascinating, genuine example of how women during this time were able to express their political influence through the sales of cookbook collections. Besides the fund-raising that the cookbook provided, this culinary collection showcases the cooking talents of local women, what was common fare during the time period, and local community opinions and prejudices. The Andrews McMeel edition of Presbyterian Cook Book also features handwritten notes and recipes from the original owner, which offer an authentic and quaint addition to the book. The handwritten notes include recipes such as Wedding Cake, Blackberry Cordial, and Mrs. Roger’s Clam Fritters, along with the individually attributed recipes printed in the book such as Mrs. Nash’s Swan Pudding, Mrs. Vincent’s Coconut Cake, Minnie’s Caramels, and Miss Phipps’s Corn Oysters. With the original handwritten notes, the historical significance of the work, and the charming recipes, Presbyterian Cook Book is truly a piece of culinary history to be treasured. This edition of Presbyterian Cook Book was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a Revolutionary War patriot and successful printer and publisher, the society is a research library documenting the lives of Americans from the colonial era through 1876. The society collects, preserves, and makes available as complete a record as possible of the printed materials from the early American experience. The cookbook collection comprises approximately 1,100 volumes.
