Excerpt from Preliminary Land Planning and Classification Report of the Public Domain Lands in the Little Missouri River Basin, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota: A Missouri River Basin Investigation The topography of the basin ranges in elevation from 2, 000 feet at the confluence of the Little Missouri and the Missouri Rivers to 4, 000 feet in the headwaters of the basin. The difference in relief within the badland formation is approximately 450 feet. The channel gradient of the Little Missouri is about 5 feet per mile and throughout its length the river follows a meandering course. Sandbars. Pools and shallow areas are common and may change position from year to year. Figure 1 illustrates the broad topographic divisions within the basin. This report of the Upper Missouri River Basin presents a preliminary analysis of the physical and economic features of the area in Montana and Wyoming embraced within the headwaters of the Missouri River tributary to Canyon Ferry Dam which is located near Helena, Montana.
