Studies have shown that social support can buffer the effects of stress in numerous situations. Recent social support literature indicates that social support influences outcome in complex ways. Social conflict may be a better predictor of negative outcomes than is social support. This study examined a model of the relationships between conflict from family (Conflict subscale of the Family Environment Scale; Moos & Moos, 1986), social support from parents and friends (Social Provisions Scale-Source Specific, Parents and Friends versions; Cutrona, 1989), and attachment behaviors (Maternal-Fetal Attachment Scale; Cranley, 1981) in the prediction of self-reported child abuse potential (Child Abuse Potential Inventory; Milner, 1986) among a sample of pregnant adolescents. Conflict and Maternal-Fetal Attachment were hypothesized to be significantly correlated with Child Abuse Potential. Social support was hypothesized to moderate the effects of high scores on Conflict and low scores on Maternal-Fetal Attachment. Participants were pregnant adolescents $(N=49)$ who sought prenatal services from a county health department. Results indicated that child abuse potential was significantly correlated with conflict, social support from friends and family, and the interaction effects of conflict and social support. The Maternal-Fetal Attachment Scale was not correlated with the Child Abuse Potential Inventory Abuse subscale. Implications for further research are discussed.

Despite a growing body of scholarship on the phenomenon of adolescent parenting, minimal attention has been given to investigating systematic changes in adolescent mothers' and their children's psychological functioning over time. This book reports on a longitudinal study conducted to examine the social and psychological consequences of teen parenting for both mothers and their children. Qualitative and quantitative analyses are used to explain why some mothers and children fare better than others, showing that the lives and developmental trajectories of adolescent mothers and children are inextricably interwoven and closely linked to the social contexts within which they live. This study examined how mothers' perceptions of their childhood relationships with their mothers, expectations about being a mother, demographic characteristics, and perceptions of social support are related to a woman's child abuse potential during pregnancy. Data were collected during an initial interview with women during their third trimester of pregnancy as part of a larger longitudinal study. One hundred twenty high-risk women between the ages of 18 and 42 were recruited through fliers from public locations and pregnancy-related programs in southeastern Michigan to participate in this study. Results showed that perceptions of a higher quality childhood relationship with one's mother, and perceptions of childhood experiences of low maternal acceptance, were negatively correlated with child abuse potential. A composite of demographic risk factors including being less than 20 years of age, being near poverty, having more than 3 children, being unmarried, having completed high school or less, and not being enrolled in public assistance programs when eligible was positively correlated with child abuse potential. Social support did not moderate relationships between perceptions of childhood relationship with mothers and child abuse potential or between demographic risk and child abuse potential. Instead, it was directly associated with child abuse potential above and beyond these two predictors. Moderate, realistic expectations about having a baby (as opposed to extremely positive or negative expectations) were not correlated with lower child abuse potential. Results from this study have important implications for intervention programs to prevent child abuse.

In 1984, a longitudinal study was launched at the University of Notre Dame to evaluate the social and psychological consequences of teenage parenting. Interwoven Lives: Adolescent Mothers and Their Children (2001) described, in detail, the development of these adolescent mothers and their children across the first eight years of life. Major delays were first noticed in children's patterns of attachment at age 1 and their IQ and personal adjustment scores at age 3. By age 8, school-related problems were found in 70% of the children. With these data as the backdrop, this companion volume, Risk and Resilience, identifies major risk factors associated with long-term developmental delays as well as the processes that led to resilience in some of the mothers and children. This new volume traces the children's development at ages 8, 10, and 14. The editors focus on identifying risk and protective factors associated with important life course trajectories as the mothers entered early adulthood and their children became adolescents. Relatively unexplored protective factors - such as religiosity, patterns of father involvement, and romantic relationships - were found to positively influence development for both teenage mothers and their children.
