This paper examined the relationship between maternal psychological control and adolescent internalizing and externalizing problems. Psychological control is a covert use of parental authority that is conceptualized to interfere with adolescent individuation. Examples include parental use of guilt, anxiety induction, and withdrawal of love. First, the history of parental control, and the evolution of the psychological control construct is discussed. Second, a review of the past decade's empirical literature linking parental psychological control and adolescent psychopathology is undertaken. Third, suggestions for gaining a better understanding of the role of parental psychological control in adolescent development is offered. Specifically, it is argued that the moderating effects of gender and ethnic group membership are an integral part of child-rearing patterns and adjustment. Finally, an investigation is presented in which these suggestions have been applied. The link between mothers' use of psychological control and adolescent internalizing and externalizing behaviors was investigated in a sample of 202 clinically referred Caucasian, African American, and Latino girls and boys. Data were collected using questionnaires of adolescents' adjustment, and perceptions of their mothers' parenting styles. Findings are discussed in the context of adolescent self-report data and then compared to results utilizing parent data. Preliminary analyses detected a significant association between maternal psychological control and both internalizing and externalizing problems in the combined sample of adolescents. However, these findings were modified once adolescent gender and ethnicity were included. Mothers' use of psychological control predicted internalizing problems for Latino and African American boys, and externalizing problems for Latina girls and African Americans of both genders. No significant associations were noted among Caucasian adolescents. Girls reported more problems in both internalizing and externalizing areas than boys, yet the relationships between maternal psychological control and adolescent problems were significantly greater for various subsets of boys, relative to the girls. This investigation illustrates the need for more culturally sensitive conceptualizations of parenting and adolescent psychopathology. Moreover, it underscores the importance for research in general to take group differences into account.

Preliminary analyses also confirmed that invididual dimensions of parenting behaviour were useful for understanding specific pathways of influence. Path analyses were used to develop and test models that predicted variance in parenting behaviours, adolescent self processes, and perceived adolescent adjustment. In these models parental self-restraint and self-efficacy directly predicted the parents' behavioural control of the adolescent, or the quality of communication they had with the adolescent. The parents' self processes, and their parenting behaviours, also directly and indirectly predicted adolescents' self processes and percieved adjustment. Furthermore, the reported happiness of the relationship between the parents directly predicted how caring the adolescent perceived their father to be. These findings suggested it would be useful to explore whether improving parents' self-efficacy, self-restraint, and relationship happiness could help adolescents be happy, satisfied and fulfilled.

In 1984, a longitudinal study was launched at the University of Notre Dame to evaluate the social and psychological consequences of teenage parenting. Interwoven Lives: Adolescent Mothers and Their Children (2001) described, in detail, the development of these adolescent mothers and their children across the first eight years of life.
