Book Description
Excerpt from Potatoes, a Money Crop: How to Grow, Fertilize, Spray and Harvest Them at a Profit; Containing the Story of a Profitable Potato Crop On many Farms throughout the country, potatoes are the chief money crop, and if properly raised are not only a source of profit themselves, but also improve the land for crops that are to follow. The great value of the potato as one of our staple articles of food, makes economical production of extreme importance. In preparing this booklet, it is not the writer's purpose to over-burden potato growers with superfluous advice. It is hoped rather to summarize for the friends and customers of the Coe-Mortimer Company and for fertilizer users in general, the results of the writers own experience in raising potatoes covering many years of practical farm life, together with the results of his observation of the best practice of prominent growers in various sections. Soils. Potatoes will succeed on a variety of soils, doing best on a medium to light loam. Early crops of potatoes are, however, raised at a great profit on light and sandy soils, while heavy soils will give profitable crops of late potatoes, provided that such soils are well drained. It is, however, useless to attempt to grow potatoes at a profit on wet, heavy and ill-drained soils. Such soils, however, may be rendered suitable for potato growing by a thorough system of drainage and subsequent plowing in of green crops. In general heavy clay soils are unsuitable for potatoes, the tubers being soggy, poorly shaped, and subject to rot. Potatoes as a rule give the largest yields upon new soils; that is land just taken up from grass or clover. This is not true of all conditions, however, as on heavy soils where the sod is extremely tough, the potato crop may be preceded by a crop of corn. Book Description
Excerpt from Potato Production in California Competition with other states for outside markets, as well as for the home markets, has been the outstanding feature of potato mar keting in recent years. This factor will have to be kept constantly in mind in future developments. The tendency is toward earlier crops and earlier shipping of the California crop, thus avoiding to some extent direct competition with the main crop in the Northwest. To show the relation of California shipping seasons to those of com peting states, figures 1 and 2 have been constructed from data sup plied by the Market News Service of the United States Department of Agriculture. These furnish us with a guide to the usual seasons of shipment and the volume of shipments from the principal potato districts on the Pacific coast - a region more or less independent of the rest of the country so far as production and consumption of potatoes are concerned. Early in the season, during April and May, there is a considerable movement of new potatoes from the San Francisco district to California markets and to markets of the Northwest. This is followed early in J une by a much heavier shipment of early potatoes from the lower San J oaquin Valley (shafter district), which goes to local, Northwestern, ' and Southwestern markets. Shipments from this district cause the first peak in the movement of potatoes from northern California. Then in July come the peak shipments from the Los Angeles district, principally from the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys. In August active movement begins from the Stockton district in northern California, and continues heavy through out the fall months, gradually declining to a moderate, steady volume during the winter. A number of other, smaller districts in the northern part of the state harvest and ship their crop from October through the winter. Book Description
Excerpt from Potato Production in the South Table I shows the annual production and value of the potato crop Of the South by States for the 5 - year period from 1916 to 1920, inclusive. The reason for presenting the figures for each year rather than the average annual production of these several States is to bring out the marked increase in production in 1917, following the short crop and consequent high prices which prevailed for late potatoes in the autumn and winter of 1916 and the spring of 1917. The State of Virginia shows the greatest increase. The production of potatoes in Virginia in 1914 was bushels, but in 1917 it was estimated at bushels, an increase of approximately 172 per cent. Other States show a larger percentage of increase, but not so great an aggregate quantity. This emphasizes one of the great possibilities of the southern potato-production territory in connection with. The food supply of the Nation. When there is a definite shortage of potatoes at the close of the storage season in the North in any particular year, it is perfectly feasible, as was demonstrated in 1917, to increase the acreage of the southern crop to such an extent as to make good in large measure any shortage in the total production which may be required. Book Description
Excerpt from Jerrard's Seed Potatoes, 1899 This great main crop potato was introduced by us last season, and though sold for the excessively high price of ten dollars a bushel, was eagerly taken by the thousands of our customers who are in the front rank of the careful farmers of means, who have been buying their seed potatoes from us every year as regularly as our catalogue is sent out, many of them since the establishment of our business. From every part of the country come words of warmest commendation, of its unprecedented yields, its superb quality for table uses, its matchless beauty, its enormously large specimens which have appeared at the agricultural fairs, and of its universally strong, vigorous, healthy and sound habits of growth. Book Description
Excerpt from Potatoes, How to Grow and Show Them: A Practical Guide to the Cultivation and General Treatment of the Potato The value of the Potato, and the interest taken in its culture at the present day, must be my excuse for laying before the public my method of culture, which may be considered to have been fairly successful, it having obtained for me, during the last four years, the greatest number of prizes of any one exhibitor at the great International Potato Exhibitions. Many of the public who visited those exhibitions, and saw the splendid samples there shown, so superior to those they had been in the habit of growing in their own gardens, imagined that there is some secret, known only to the few, by which those samples were produced. But there is no royal road to success, the only secret being - Good Culture, the principles of which I have endeavoured to give in the following pages.
