Book Description
Half-hours with the Telescope Being a Popular Guide to the Use of the Telescope as a Means of Amusement and Instruction. by Richard A. (Richard Anthony) Proctor CHAPTER I. A HALF-HOUR ON THE STRUCTURE OF THE TELESCOPE. There are few instruments which yield more pleasure and instruction than the Telescope. Even a small telescope-only an inch and a half or two inches, perhaps, in aperture-will serve to supply profitable amusement to those who know how to apply its powers. I have often seen with pleasure the surprise with which the performance even of an opera-glass, well steadied, and directed towards certain parts of the heavens, has been witnessed by those who have supposed that nothing but an expensive and colossal telescope could afford any views of interest. But a well-constructed achromatic of two or three inches in aperture will not merely supply amusement and instruction, -it may be made to do useful work. The student of astronomy is often deterred from telescopic observation by the thought that in a field wherein so many have laboured, with abilities and means perhaps far surpassing those he may possess, he is little likely to reap results of any utility. He argues that, since the planets, stars, and nebulæ have been scanned by Herschel and Rosse, with their gigantic mirrors, and at Pulkova and Greenwich with refractors whose construction has taxed to the utmost the ingenuity of the optician and mechanic, it must be utterly useless for an unpractised observer to direct a telescope of moderate power to the examination of these objects. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience

Book Description
Excerpt from The Telescope Much has been written of telescopes, first and last, but it is for the most part scattered through papers in three or four languages, and quite inaccessible to the ordinary reader. For his benefit the references are, so far as is practicable, to English sources, and dimensions are given, regretfully, in English units. Certain branches Of the subject are not here discussed for lack Of space or because there is recent literature at hand to which reference can be made. Such topics are telescopes notable chiefly for their dimensions, and photographic apparatus on which special treatises are available. Celestial photography is a branch Of astronomy which stands on its own feet, and although many telescopes are successfully used for photography through the help of color screens, the photographic telescope proper and its use belongs to a field somewhat apart, requiring a technique quite its own. Excerpt from The Telescope: The Principles Involved in the Construction of Refracting and Reflecting Telescopes The following discussion of the ele mentary optical principles of the tele scope was written two years ago, and is now published without alteration or additions. From the nature of the subject, the writer can, of course, claim no origin ality, except for the form in which he presents the material, collected and condensed from various treatises on optics.
