Excerpt from The "Poor Potter" Of Yorktown, Vol. 2: A Study of a Colonial Pottery Factory; Archaeology, Colonial National Historical Park Virginia The most conclusive evidence that slave labor was used at the Yorktown factory dates from 1760, after the complex had shut down. In that year one of Rogers' daughters brought a case to court in an attempt to claim part of her fathers estate. A letter from her attorney advised her that you will not have a right to any profits from the Pot house as you had no right to the Slaves. It is not possible to determine just how profitable the pottery making enterprise had been, but this letter implies that the business continued to make money for some time after Rogers died. We can at least conclude that Rogers would have employed as many as 30 slaves and servants in various jobs connected with the manu facture of ceramics. Excerpt from The "Poor Potter" Of Yorktown, Vol. 3: A Study of a Colonial Pottery Factory; Ceramics The Yorktown Pottery Factory produced large quantities of utilitarian ceramics during its generation of operation. Both lead glazed earthenwares and salt glazed stonewares, perhaps the earliest in America, were manufactured in a variety of shapes. A total of 23 shapes were identified as having been made at Yorktown (table 4, Figures 146 Nearly all shapes were found in both bisque and glazed varieties. Of the 23 total shapes, 21 were produced in earthenware and 15 in stoneware Ten forms were produced in either stoneware or earthenware' thirteen forms were produced in both wares. The large variety of shapes produced by one colonial pottery is remarkable. Possibly many additional shapes were produced as well. Some ceramic shapes are distinctly out of place in Yorktown, an area of English settlement. We refer to the stove tile, many of which, when put together, formed a stove a distinctly Germanic form. The quality of Yorktown ceramics is high, especially for certain forms, such as mugs and teapots. It is highly probable that very experienced potters worked at Yorktown. This volume presents selected material associated with potters' workshops and pottery production from some 14 Early Iron Age contexts northwest of the Athenian Acropolis that range in date from the Protogeometric through Archaic periods. Located in the area that was to become the Agora of Classical Athens, these deposits establish that the place was used for industrial activity until it was formally transformed into the civic and commercial center of the city in the early 5th century B.C. The Early Iron Age potters' debris published in this volume sheds light on many aspects of pottery production, in prehistory as well as in the Classical and later periods. The material includes test-pieces, wasters and other production discards. There is also a reassessment of the evidence associated with the kiln underlying the later Tholos.
