Book Description
Police Analysis and Planning for Homicide Bombings is oriented toward planning police operations in the public sector, but will be usable by other public officials as well as by some military and private sector police operations. It addresses police threat assessment of, vulnerability assessment to, defense against and response to attacks by homicide bombs. It begins with an essay on the distinctions between military and police operations and includes an examination of the U.S. counter terrorist policy and structure, assessment of explosive weapons of mass destruction and the terrorist ability to make and use them, the legal limitations of police response operations in the United States, and defensive response to this form of attack. It concludes with commentary on actions that may be needed if this threat continues to develop in the United States. Relying upon both experience and research, the author has synthesized the varied military, law enforcement and private security approaches into a detailed analysis of the threat posed by terrorist use of homicide bombs and the necessary internal response. With the first-hand experience of applying the knowledge in an actual threat environment, the combination of historical perspective and reality confrontation produces an effective examination of the topic for the police administrator and emergency planner.

Book Description
This text is oriented toward planning police operations in the public sector, but will be usable by other public officials as well as some private sector police operations. It addresses police threat assessment of, vulnerability assessment to, defense against and response to attacks by special weapons of mass destruction in a civilian setting. These include chemical, biological and radiological attacks. It begins with a review of the policy and legal issues pertaining to special weapons and of the pertinent counter-terrorist response considerations discussed in the author's other book, POLICE ANALYSIS AND PLANNING FOR VEHICULAR BOMBINGS. It continues with assessment of the various types of special weapons of mass destruction and the terrorist's ability to make and use them, a historical review of significant incidents for each of the major subcategories of weapons, the limitations of police response operations in the United States, and defense response to this form of attack. It concludes with commentary on actions that may be needed if this threat continues to develop in the United States. Hopefully, this text will be of benefit to those officers and officials that have never had to confront this type of problem, and will help build the skill and psychological preparation for battle that prevents the attack and enables effective response.

Book Description
The United States and other countries throughout the world have suffered from catastrophic terrorism causing mass casualties. Elsewhere, terrorists have taken the lives of prominent people in ostentatiously cruel ways. In Iraq, bloody terrorist attacks are an endemic phenomenon. They have become part of daily life. There is no reason to expect a reduction of the new terrorism in the foreseeable future. On the contrary, there will be new waves of terrorism, including attacks with unconventional means. The globalization of the new terrorism is reflected not only in the mobility of terrorists but especially in the worldwide distribution of ideas and methods practiced by terrorist networks. The world is facing the threat of a shift from terrorism to terror - towards a society intimidated by a continuous threat of arbitrary, massive violence. This book addresses the shift in many parts of the world from terrorism to an atmosphere of terror. It stresses the lack of symmetry between democratic governments which have to obey the role of law and international conventions, and terrorists cherishing a total denial of rules and norms. The authors formulate five missions for democratic governments: do not deny the most serious threat; make life as difficult as possible for terrorists; upgrade the quality of acute crisis management in the case of a terrorist attack; improve the quality of consequences management after terrorist attacks; and increase the effort to channel collective stress in the aftermath of a terrorist assault. The authors claim that the fight against terrorism is first and foremost a responsibility of democratic states. Throughout its existence, the United Nations has been unable to give shape and substance to an effective counterterrorism strategy. An alliance of democratic states would be in a much better position to take on the legitimate fight against international terrorism.

Book Description
"Contemporary Issues in Family Law and Mental Health is an original and practical discussion of cutting-edge issues in family relations and the law. Through the prism of family law, and custody disputes in particular, it discusses the basic principles that underlie the proper use of mental health evidence in court and it sets out the proper use of mental health evidence in litigation. In this book of twenty chapters, Michael G. Brock and Samuel Saks discuss many important topics: Facilitative and evaluative mediation, case preparation versus the expert witness, the privilege and ethics of forensic practice, therapy court, valid and invalid scientific evidence, false allegations of abuse, parental alienation, child advocacy, mental health forensics, and child therapy. In addition, the effect of the amendment to the Michigan Rule of Evidence 703 on expert testimony in court is examined, as well as the forensic interviewing protocol in child abuse cases, science and technology, and the search for truth. In several chapters, the authors also describe the problems involved in establishing child abuse in the courts. The book also includes the elements of child custody evaluations, the use of the polygraph test, and when child abuse constitutes malpractice. This engaging book will enrich the literature on family law and mental health. It will help shed light on the challenges and pitfalls that surround the use of mental health evidence in court."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Description
The mission, authority, organization, role, function, and the fundamental terminology that affects homeland security in the United States is examined in this book. Homeland security demands quick, effective organization to operate in emergencies, but simultaneously defies it by the limited time frame and sheer scope of the problem. The author focuses on the five core missions of homeland security: preventing terrorism, securing borders, enforcing immigration law, safeguarding cyber systems, and ensuring resilience to disasters. These core missions require five common skill areas for homeland security operations: risk assessment, determining authority and capability to enact solutions, identifying organizational structure and functions, recognizing operational patterns, and applying analytical techniques to achieve the best performance possible. Unique features include the key points of contact, potential areas of conflict, legal and executive aspects, work flow processes and their analysis, examination of risk assessment, review of implementation and response, emergency services and logistics, and political issues. In addition, operational assignment of resources for intelligence, tactical response, investigations, prosecution, and confinement are discussed. A glossary of abbreviated terms frequently used is among the special features provided. With 18 illustrations, this up-to-date overview of homeland security and the necessary methods for implementation is a resource of valuable information.
