Book Description
Excerpt from Poetical Works of Friedrich Schiller I claim no more for the following translations than that they are a tolerably faithful rendering of the original poems of Schiller. I have made no attempt to seize upon Schiller's supposed meaning and clothe it in language of my own. My object has been to reproduce not only Schiller's thoughts, but Schiller's method of describing those thoughts, as accurately as was consistent with a change of language and the exigencies of verse. Where Schiller used the Elegiac metre, that metre has been adhered to in the translation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life and Works of Friedrich Schiller I have wished to give a trustworthy account of Schiller and his works on a scale large enough to permit the doing of something like justice to his great name, but not so large as in itself to kill all hope and chance of readableness. By a trustworthy account I mean one that is accurate in the matters of fact and sane in the matters of judgment. That there is room for an English book thus conceived will be readily granted, I imagine, by all those who know. At any rate Schiller is one of those writers of whom a new appreciation, from time to time, will always be in order. Book Description
Excerpt from Complete Works of Friedrich Schiller, in Eight Volumes: Aesthetical and Philosophical Essays First, then, aesthetics has for its object the vast realm of the beautiful. And it may be most adequately defined as the philosophy of art or of the fine arts. To some the definition may seem arbitrary, as excluding the beautiful in nature; but it will cease to appear so if it is remarked that the beauty which is the work of art is higher than natural beauty, because it is the offspring of the mind. Moreover, if, in conformity with a certain school of modern philosophy, the mind be viewed as the true being, including all in itself, it must be admitted that beauty is only truly beautiful when it Shares in the nature of mind, and is mind's offspring. Viewed in this light, the beauty of nature is only a reflection of the beauty of the mind, only an imperfect beauty, which as to its essence is included in that of the mind. Nor has it ever entered into the mind of any thinker to develop the beautiful in natural objects, so as to convert it into a science and a system. The field of natural beauty is too uncertain and too fluctuating for this pur pose. Moreover, the relation of beauty in nature and beauty in art forms a part of the science of aesthetics, and finds again its proper place. Book Description
Excerpt from Life of Friedrich Schiller Like Goethe, who was ten years his senior, Schiller had the advantage of being born in South Germany, in one of the richest and sunniest of all the beautiful valleys that supply the main stream of the Rhine. His forefathers for some generations had lived in decent poverty, generally as bakers, in one or other of the.
