Book Description
Excerpt from Poems, on Moral and Religious Subjects Were it not that a preface is considered by many persons as an indispensable accompaniment to a book, the authoress of this volume would prefer laying it before the world without one. But to omit complying with the general custom in this respect might seem to indicate indifference to public opinion, or the ridiculous ascription of extraordinary merit to What will be found simple in its style, and owing its chief importance to its moral and religious inculcations. Conscious of having been in uenced by the best motives, when determining on publication; and equally Well aware how defective her book must appear to those whose reading has been restricted to works of acknowledged excellence, and whose taste has been formed by the finest models; the authoress conceives that apology is, in the first instance, unnecessary - and would be, perhaps, in the second, unavailing. Book Description
Excerpt from The Poems of Phillis Wheatley Our purpose in republishing this little book of poems, a century and a quarter after the death of the author, is to acquaint the present generation more thoroughly with her remarkable genius. She was born in Africa, and at the age of eight years was brought to America and sold into slavery to a Mrs. John Wheatley in Boston. Within a year of her arrival she could read and write English, of which she was previously in entire ignorance. She also acquired a knowledge of the classics, and developed a pleasing poetic style. Before she was twenty her writings had attracted the attention of many literary people of England, and in 1773 a volume of her poems was published in London. Since then there have been many editions published; one in 1784 in Boston, another in Albany, 1793; another in 1802, another in 1805, another 1816. Memoirs and Poems of Phillis Wheatley in 1834, 1835 and 1838. Her poems constituted the second volume of Abbie Joseph La Valle's book, "The Negro Equalled by few Europeans," in 1801. Besides these, many separate poems have been published, perhaps the earliest being in memory of George Whiteneld, printed in 1770. Many of her poems were not published. She wrote a poem to George Washington, which the general highly complimented, but which he was too modest to publish. Phillis Wheatley was married to a Mr. Peters, in Boston, but died soon after in 1784, at about the age of thirty-one years. Her. poems were written and published before her marriage, and she was known as Phillis Wheatley rather than Phillis W. Peters. Book Description
Excerpt from Orations and Poetry: On Moral and Religious Subjects Man, ever since his fall in the garden of Eden, has been inspired with a spirit of deviation from righteousness, which often increases his misery. His imaginations are only evil continually-laying structures of wretchedness and wo; and hewing out vessels that can hold no water. Such is his digres sion from the requirements of God, that he is a stran ger to virtue, and lies buried in the open field of his pollution. But among all his wicked inventions, King Alcohol is the topmost stone. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Published in 1773, this collection brings together many of Wheatley's finest writings addressed to figures of the day. She writes evocative verse to academic establishments, military officers and even the King of England, with other verses discussing various subjects in verse form, offering condolences and verse commemorating recent events, or the death of a recent loved one. Recognized as one of the first black poets to be widely appreciated in the Western world, Phillis Wheatley was a devoted Christian whose talent with the English language impressed and awed her peers. This anthology of inspirational poetry affirms her reputation as an artist, and demonstrates her ability to console and assure people. Wheatley took plenty of influence from past works of poetry, such as Ovid's Metamorphosis. Several of the poems in this collection mention or allude to such masterpieces, the voracious absorption of which helped Phillis Wheatley to learn and hone her creative abilities. As well as being good poems in their own right, this verse gives the reader insightful glimpses of late 18th century society in which the author lived. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public.
