Book Description
Excerpt from Poems of Nature and Sentiment Ideas have come and sentiments have sometimes seized me, to express which the brush or crayon seemed inadequate. Instead of taking graphic form, these resolved themselves into words and rhyme, and I have noted them down at odd intervals for some years past The often repeated request of friends is my only excuse for now putting them into print. If verse has occasionally amused me, painting has been my more constant occupation, and to arrive at poetry in both is my hope and aim. Book Description
Excerpt from Poems of Sentiment and Humor In true humbleness I wish to offer thanks for the recognition which my youthful works have received from the many readers who have taken time to peruse my early efforts at versification. Heeding the dictates of my heart I have endeavored to portray the humorous and sentimental emotions which my nature endowed. Taking my share of the poet's license, I refrain from further expression by quoting the opinion of my brother, O. Gordon Due, which appeared in the preface of my pamphlet issued in the years 1901 and 1902. "Among the many poems which have emanated from my brother, Joseph J. C. Due's pen, I think 'A Woman's Craving' is his best effort, although he may write one which will excel it. People of humorous nature like 'When Jones Was On the Hog, ' 'Before and After Marriage - With Exceptions, ' and 'There Is Always a Sucker to Bite.' I like 'A Woman's Craving' because it is a sentimental poem. These poems have appeared in able journals. 'A Woman's Craving' appeared in the July number of Brann's Iconoclast in the year 1901, on the same page with the poem that Richard E.Stephenson dedicated to the Presidential Tour. Book Description
Excerpt from Poems of Nature and Love Under the present title are included selections from two former volumes, Accolan of Gaul, and Lyrics and la'yls. Such poems only as appeared to the author's judgment worthiest of retention have been retained. In the selection of these he has endeavored to exercise a critical discrimination and, to the best of his ability, to correct or expunge the frequent obscurity, superfluity, and exaggerated expression of the earlier works. Many of the poems have been partially, several entirely, rewritten. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Poems of Nature and Life But, happening to step into the store where his book was announced to be on sale, and finding no copies there which were not hidden under the counter, the poet ordered all the remaining Copies of the edition to be sent to his own residence, and gave them away privately to any persons who desired to read them. Possibly these facts may lend new interest to the introductory poem, The Author to his Book in Early Spring, and the lines to the Reader. They Show, at least, how singularly sincere were the senti ments there expressed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from In Nature's Temple These poems and sketches were written during a period of over sixty years. I am aware that however it may have been in those Old days when I was young, it is now an Offence to indulge in poesy. I can only plead in mitigation that like many who love the sweet Strains Of music, I love the har mony Of words when they convey thought and sentiment, and that I have taken my part in the active affairs Of life, Spending only leisure hours with poesy, which I sometimes did not have for years. I have only indulged in verse when the spirit Of the Muses said Write. Whether I have merited the smiles or frowns of the Goddess of Song it is for you, gentle readers, to decide. You are the judge and the jury combined. From your verdict there is no appeal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Nature-Poems: And Others I pondered on its magic flight, When, falling on the lawn, my sight With one more tiny thing Arrested was. There at my feet I saw a daisy, clean and neat, From out the green grass spring. I thought I heard it silent cry, You've complimented much the fly Am I not worth a thought? I cannot buzz, and fly, and spring, I know, like yonder little thing, But that is not my fault! Saluted thus, I plucked the flower, And could have gazed for full an hour Upon its lovely form Within whose pure white radiance grew Such golden constellation true, Of flowers well-formed, though small.
