Book Description
Excerpt from Poems From France Many would-be authors understand the feelings of Roosevelt when impatient to write more books, he was told by some critics that his works were interesting but not literary, for after a lecture-recital of many of the poems herein, one reported that the rhymes were human, spiritual and patriotic, but of no lit crary value. True, none have been printed in the big magazines. Timidity prevented their sending; some, however, have appeared in the Boston Transcript; but it is because they have seemed to find an acceptance in the minds and hearts of so many children and youth, and there has been such a sincere and insistent demand on the part of principals and teachers for a substantial book with notes and illustrations, that this modest volume has been published. Book Description
Excerpt from Contemporary French Poetry The Parnassian school of poetry was definitely killed about 1885 by a new generation of poets whom their enemies christened les decadents. Some of them accepted the name; but it fell into disuse among themselves as the term symbolists gained ground. There is a prevalent notion among the ill-informed that the decadents, or, better, symbolists were, or are, perverted voluptuaries, with no more back bone than a lampern, victims of hyperaesthesia. Book Description
Excerpt from The Poets of Modern France The second relation which the translated poem must sustain to its original concerns the far more difficult and exacting matter of form. The lan guage involved will, ofmthe charac ter of the translator's problem. If he is dealing with languages that have practically the same pro sodic system, any two Germanic languages for in stance, he must scrupulously preserve the music, the exact cadences of his original. If he is trans lating from a language that has a quite different prosody, such as the French, he must interpret the original forms by analogous forms. Thus I have rendered all poems written wholly in alex andrines into English heroic verse, but I have sought to make that verse as fluid and as various in movement as the types of alexandrine in my originals. When the prosodic contour of a poem, however, depended definitely upon the contrast of alexandrines with longer or shorter verses, I have preserved the exact syllabic lengths. In lyrical measures the aim must be, of course, to hear the characteristic music, to transfer this and to follow its modulations from line to line and stanza to stanza. Book Description
Excerpt from Studies Early French Poetry The reasons of this ignorance are mainly two; the in efficient and careless way in which French - French, which might be made as useful in education as Latin - is taught, and the lack of English books on the subject. French books, too, are not always easy of access, and our public libraries are generally most deficient in continental literature. And yet the means of acquiring a knowledge of French literature are much more readily got at than those of learning our own. Numberless essays, e'tudes, treatises, collections, and histories have been made in France. In no country have writers found so much appreciation in no country are there more careful editions, more elaborate biographies, and more loving criticism. What the student wants 'is direction and advice; he has to be told when to read and how 5 and, in general, he has to be taught that France has a literature independent of the wellknown names, as original and as well worthy of study as that of our own country. In one small field I propose to endeavour to afford him information and direction. Should he Wish to study the early efforts of France in poetical literature, I h0pe that in the following pages he may find matter that may not be wholly waste of time. Book Description
Excerpt from Somewhere in France: And Other Poems "Somewhere in France." "Somewhere in France," is all that she may know Of where her husband waits to meet the foe; Far from his home, when life is past its noon, He leads his troops beneath an alien moon. But this she knows, through days of anxious care, Wherever he may be, her flag is there. Through days of hope, and days of dreadful chance, Her loyal heart is there, "somewhere in France." "Somewhere in France" her lover waits the call To hurl himself amidst the battle's pall; Gone from her side, when all their rosy dreams Had led through peaceful fields, by laughing streams. She would not call him back, for this she knows - Wherever he may go Old Glory goes. Though thus may end, for her, life's dear romance, Her loyal heart is there, "somewhere in France." Book Description
Excerpt from Six French Poets: Studies in Contemporary Literature IN the Spring Of 1914, I was invited to deliver a series of lectures on modern French poetry in Boston during the following winter. This book consists of those lec tures, rewritten and arranged for the press. It is a strange thing that while so many Americans and English repair every year to France, SO few Of them, in either country, realized What a serious and self-sacri ficing people the French were making Of themselves, before the present war brought the fact to their notice. TO students Of French literature, this was no matter for surprise. They understood that the earnest and single minded endeavour applied to the arts must have its counterpart in other branches Of the national life. That this was the case, is now abundantly proved. We, in the English-speaking countries, are asking ourselves how we could have so misunderstood the French people. But to be misunderstood has been the lot Of Frenchmen when dealing with anglo-saxons from time immemorial.
