Book Description
Plant bugs are not well known despite their economic importance, the large numbers found on the fruit crops, and the fact that they have been with us for a long time. This bulletin aims to help economic research scientists and fruit growers to identify the plant bugs found on the fruit crops and to provide information on their habits and biology. The 81 species collected represent approximately 6% of the total number of Miridae species believed to occur in Canada. Adults of most species treated here are illustrated, and male claspers of closely related species are figured. Brief descriptions of adults, biology, and distributions are included. Keys to subfamilies, genera, and species are also provided.

Book Description
Plant bugs--Miridae, the largest family of the Heteroptera, or true bugs--are globally important pests of crops such as alfalfa, apple, cocoa, cotton, sorghum, and tea. Some also are predators of crop pests and have been used successfully in biological control. Certain omnivorous plant bugs have been considered both harmful pests and beneficial natural enemies of pests on the same crop, depending on environmental conditions or the perspective of an observer. As high-yielding varieties that lack pest resistance are planted, mirids are likely to become even more important crop pests. They also threaten crops as insecticide resistance in the family increases, and as the spread of transgenic crops alters their populations. Predatory mirids are increasingly used as biocontrol agents, especially of greenhouse pests such as thrips and whiteflies. Mirids provide abundant opportunities for research on food webs, intraguild predation, and competition.Recent worldwide activity in mirid systematics and biology testifies to increasing interest in plant bugs. The first thorough review and synthesis of biological studies of mirids in more than 60 years, Biology of the Plant Bugs will serve as the basic reference for anyone studying these insects as pests, beneficial IPM predators, or as models for ecological research.

Book Description
This handbook is a companion to Agricultural Insect Pests of the Tropics and their Control (2nd Edition 1983) and, like the earlier book, it is designed as a source of reference about most of the major insect and mite pests of agricultural crops. These two volumes by the same author now present a world-wide coverage of the economically important insect pests of tropical and temperate agriculture. Students taking courses in entomology, agriculture, crop pest biology and crop protection, and professional workers concerned with identification and control of insect pests, will find this comprehensive account an indispensable handbook and source of reference.
