Book Description
The pirate Bartholomew Roberts is an enigma. As a Calvinist Christian, he refuses his crew both strong drink and women on his ship. Despite his high moral standards, however, the lovely and seductive Lady Mary Jane Llewellyn, with whom he has a love-hate relationship, is aboard. Roberts wears the scarlet cape of a cardinal of the Catholic Church, with a large diamond cross blessed by the pope around his neck-and yet he conducts Protestant services every Sabbath. He confounds all expectations when, after attacking the ships of the Royal African Company, he routinely sets their "black gold" slaves free. Roberts flies not the black Jolly Roger flag with its skull and crossbones, but instead a red pennant upon which are stitched two forms: a skeleton and a rover, both reaching for a gold chalice. Some say it is life and death reaching for a tankard of ale, but they're wrong. To Roberts, all of creation is a dance between life and death, and in the cup the answer awaits those brave enough to chase it. For his actions and attitudes, both the king and the pope want him dead-but Roberts discovered that in death, he found the key to life.

Break the code, me bucko, and you'll be forced to walk the plank. In The Big Book of Pirate Stuff, Captain Michael MacLeod and Jamaica Rose teach the fine art of pirateering, from plundering, pillaging, and gambling to digging for buried treasure. A dabble of history, a smatterin' of activities, and a healthy dose of derring-do make this book a must-read for aspiring pirates.

Book Description
For the best part of three centuries the 'corsairs' or pirates from the 'Barbary' coasts of North Africa dominated the Western and Central Mediterranean. They made forays far into the Atlantic, preying on the shipping and coastal settlements across Christian Europe, ranging from Greece to West Africa and the British Isles. In the absence of organized European navies they seldom faced serious opposition, and the scope of their raiding was remarkable. As well as piracy and slave-raiding they fought as privateers, sharing their spoils with the rulers of the port-cities that provided them with ships, men, and a ready market. This book examines their development and their style of fighting, chronicles their achievements and failures, and illustrates their appearance and that of their ships, explaining why they were so feared and effective.

But Galdrick the wizard gives the people of Heldhaven hope, proclaiming that their answer lies in the Korophin. But no one knows who or what the Korophin are, or where they can be found. No one, that is, except for Matthew, who unknowingly wears a magical medallion that will lead them to the Korophin, and with them, deliverance. Matthew will have to face battles, kidnappings, pirates, monsters, and magical beings as he seeks to save his homeland. He and his companions will journey to the very end of the world to find the Korophin. But will they be in time to save their home?

Book Description
The little-known history of the pirates who roamed Maine’s rocky coast and remote islands—and what they left behind . . . Maine has never been regarded as a pirate haven—but only because witnesses were few and far between. With a rugged coast and more than four thousand offshore islands, Maine’s dark waters attracted sea raiders like Dixie Bull from the 1600s through colonial times. Pirate treasure still awaits discovery in Phippsburg and Machias, and pirate deceit prompted a massacre in ancient Fort Loyall. The infamous Captain Kidd may have prowled the waters off Deer Isle, while farther down the coast a woman and a bloodthirsty band of cutthroats lured ships to disaster at Isles of Shoals. In this colorful history featuring reenactment photos and other illustrations, award-winning investigative journalist Greg Latimer separates historical fact from fiction and leads readers on an adventure through the state’s foggy and treacherous past.
