Book Description
We are hearing a LOT about renewable energy these days! But unlike most available resources on alternative energy that focus on politics and economic impacts, da Rosa's practical guide, Fundamentals of Renewable Energy Processes, is dedicated to explaining the scientific and technological principles and processes that enable energy production from safe, renewable, clean sources. Advances in the renewable energy sphere are proceeding with an unprecedented speed, and in order for the world's alarming energy challenges to be solved, solid, up-to-date resources addressing the technical aspects of renewables are essential. This new, updated 2e of da Rosa's successful book continues to give readers all the background they need to gain a thorough understanding of the most popular types of renewable energy—hydrogen, solar power, biomass, wind power, and hydropower—from the ground up. The latest advances in all these technologies are given particular attention, and are carefully contextualized to help professionals and students grasp the "whys and hows" behind these breakthroughs. - Discusses how and why the most popular renewable energy sources work, including wind, solar, bio and hydrogen - Provides a thorough technical grounding for all professionals and students investigating renewable energy - The new 2e of a highly regarded guide written by an internationally renowned pioneer

Spatial Statistics for Remote Sensing
Author: A. Stein
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0306476479
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 289
Book Description
This book is a collection of papers on spatial statistics for remote sensing. The book emerges from a study day that was organized in 1996 at the International Institute for Aerospace Survey and Earth Sciences, ITC, in Enschede, The Netherlands. It was by several means a memorable event. The beautiful new building, according to a design by the famous modern Dutch architect Max van Huet was just opened, and this workshop was the first to take place there. Of course, much went wrong during the workshop, in particular as the newest electronic equipment regularly failed. But the workshop attrackted more than hundred attendants, and was generally well received. The results of the workshop have been published in Stein et al. (1998). The aim of the workshop was to address issues of spatial statistics for remote sensing. The ITC has a long history on collecting and analyzing satellite and other remote sensing data, but its involvement into spatial statistics is of a more recent date. Uncertainties in remote sensing images and the large amounts of data in many spectral bands are now considered to be of such an impact that it requires a separate approach from a statistical point of view. To quote from the justification of the study day, we read: Modern communication means such as remote sensing require an advanced use of collected data. Satellites collect data with different resolution on different spectral bands.

Publisher:
ISBN: 9781921954306
Category : Land cover
Languages : en
Pages : 95
Book Description
Geoscience Australia and the Australian Bureau of Agricultrual and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) have developed a Dynamic Land Cover Dataset (DLCD) for Australia. The DLCD will allow land managers and decision makers to move beyond snapshot land cover observations ... This report describes the DLCD, how the dataset was generated, presents a cmparison of the DLCD with independent datasets and examples of how the DLCD classification can be used to analyse trends in the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and other data sources. The report also compares the DLCD approach to other National and International land cover mapping approaches--P. 1.

Introduction to the Physics and Techniques of Remote Sensing
Author: Charles Elachi
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0471783382
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 572
Book Description
The science and engineering of remote sensing--theory and applications The Second Edition of this authoritative book offers readers the essential science and engineering foundation needed to understand remote sensing and apply it in real-world situations. Thoroughly updated to reflect the tremendous technological leaps made since the publication of the first edition, this book covers the gamut of knowledge and skills needed to work in this dynamic field, including: * Physics involved in wave-matter interaction, the building blocks for interpreting data * Techniques used to collect data * Remote sensing applications The authors have carefully structured and organized the book to introduce readers to the basics, and then move on to more advanced applications. Following an introduction, Chapter 2 sets forth the basic properties of electromagnetic waves and their interactions with matter. Chapters 3 through 7 cover the use of remote sensing in solid surface studies, including oceans. Each chapter covers one major part of the electromagnetic spectrum (e.g., visible/near infrared, thermal infrared, passive microwave, and active microwave). Chapters 8 through 12 then cover remote sensing in the study of atmospheres and ionospheres. Each chapter first presents the basic interaction mechanism, followed by techniques to acquire, measure, and study the information, or waves, emanating from the medium under investigation. In most cases, a specific advanced sensor is used for illustration. The book is generously illustrated with fifty percent new figures. Numerous illustrations are reproduced in a separate section of color plates. Examples of data acquired from spaceborne sensors are included throughout. Finally, a set of exercises, along with a solutions manual, is provided. This book is based on an upper-level undergraduate and first-year graduate course taught by the authors at the California Institute of Technology. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of the field and its applications, it is appropriate for students in electrical engineering, applied physics, geology, planetary science, astronomy, and aeronautics. It is also recommended for any engineer or scientist interested in working in this exciting field.

William Morris: His Life, Work, and Friends
Author: Philip Henderson
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Authors, English
Languages : en
Pages : 452
Book Description
It was in the medieval town of Oxford, too, that Morris developed two of the devotions that were to dominate his life: passionate commitment to the social and artistic ideals he saw in medieval culture, and friendship with Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who was to be mentor, rival and--ultimately--bête noire. Henderson traces Morris' development from those early, colorful, brightly optimistic days into the extraordinary later years--when he was "working" poet, architect, decorator, fabric designer, weaver, dyer, embroiderer, and printer, the guiding spirit of "The Firm" of Morris and his associates, as well as passionate political activist, lecturer, and conservationist. He was one of the most influential men in England in both the arts and politics--truly, as Wylie Sypher has called him, "the Leonardo of the Victorians." Henderson at last explains the riddle of Morris' tragic marriage, separating the private torment from the confused public image.
