Book Description
Excerpt from Pianoforte and Chamber Music This special value consists in part in the refined and unfailing musical skill with which the composers have handled their slender material; but more in the quality of the music itself. The great works of chamber mu sic, no matter how profound, speak in the language of intimacy. They show no signs of the need to impress or overwhelm an audience. Perhaps no truly great music does. But operas and even symphonies must be written with more or less consideration for external circumstances, whereas in the smaller forms, com posers seem to be concerned only with the musical inspiration which they f eel the desire to express. They speak to an audience of understanding friends, as it were, before whom they may reveal themselves with out thought of the effectiveness of their speech. They seem in them to have consulted only their ideals. They have taken for granted the sympathetic attention of their audience. Book Description
Excerpt from Early Keyboard Music, Vol. 2: A Collection of Pieces Written for the Virginal, Spinet, Harpsichord, and Clavichord Orlando gibbons was born in Cambridge in 1583, of a noted family of musicians, and, like the other virginal-composers, was highly distinguished as an organist. In that capacity he received an appointment, in 1604, to the Chapel Royal, and in 1623 to Westminster Abbey. He composed much church-music; his first virginal-music was published in 1610, and the following year he joined Byrde and Bull in the publication of the famous virginal-collection entitled Parthenia. John blow came upon the scene after the art of music in England had been crushed and many of its leading practitioners dispersed by the Civil War and Pur itan domination. Born in 1648, he was among the first to join the reestablished Children of the Chapel Royal after the Restoration. While yet a chorister, he tried his hand at composition, and attained no mean eminence in the eyes of his contem poraries through his church-music and as an organist, in the latter capacity occupy ing some of. The most prominent positions in the kingdom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Primer of Pianoforte Playing Simplest, and will require but brief consideration. It is obvious that the notes in staccato accompaniment must be light and delicate, and not strong enough to interfere with the melody which they accompany. When they are required to be soft, and yet bright in tone and distinctly articulated, which is often the case, they must be played with a steady hand, the fingers being held in a bent position and with little or no movement of the joints, and the hand lifted from the key with great rapidity, but to a very short distance. This movement, which is very slight though quick, comes from the action of the elbow-joint, and the tone produced is crisp and short, with very little percussion. This touch is suitable for such passages as the bass in the Scherzo of Beethoven's Sonata in E flat, op. 31, No. 3, or the chords of the right hand in the 108th and following bars of the first movement of the same.
