Book Description
Excerpt from The Fruit Garden: A Treatise Intended to Explain and Illustrate the Physiology of Fruit Trees, the Theory and Practice of All Operations Connected With the Propagation, Transplanting, Pruning and Training of Orchard and Garden Trees, as Standards, Dwarfs, Pyramids, Espalie In undertaking a revision of this work I found that little was to be done except in the lists of fruits. In Apples, Pears, Cherries, Plums, Apricots, Nectarines and Quinces only a few changes were to be made. Very little has been done in the past ten years in the way of introducing new varieties of these fruits, especially of such as can be recommended for, or are likely to prove worthy of, extensive or general cultivation. In Peaches and Grapes and what are termed the "small fruits": Blackberries, Raspberries and Strawberries, a very large number of new varieties have been introduced. These are so many as to make it somewhat difficult and embarrassing to select from the mass those which are likely to prove of permanent value. This I have endeavored to do. Those which I have considered worthy, have been added to the select lists, while those which are merely promising, or of doubtful value, are arranged in separate lists. Cultivators who possess the requisite facilities will do well to try them all. This experimental work is not only interesting and instructive to those engaged in it, but results are obtained which must be of general value. Within a few years there has been a perfect flood of new peaches, grapes, and small fruits, only a small number of which will stand the test of time. The majority of them in a few years will be forgotten. To determine which are to be retained, and which rejected, is a tedious and expensive work, but it must be done. Excerpt from The Fruit Garden: A Treatise Intended to Explain and Illustrate the Physiology of Fruit Trees, the Theory and Practice of All Operations Connected With the Propagation, Transplanting, Pruning and Training of Orchard and Garden Trees, as Standards, Dwarfs, Pyramids, Espalie The subject of this treatise is one in which almost all classes of the community are more or less practically eu gaged and interested. Agriculture is pursued by one class, and commerce by another; the mechanic arts, fine arts, and learned professions by others; but fruit culture, to a greater or less extent, by all.
