Physicochemical and Environmental Plant Physiology
Author: Park S. Nobel
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0125200269
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 589
Book Description
"Physiology," which is the study of the function of cells, organs, and organisms, derives from the Latin physiologia, which in turn comes from the Greek physi- or physio-, a prefix meaning natural, and logos, meaning reason or thought. Thus physiology suggests natural science and is now a branch of biology dealing with processes and activities that are characteristic of living things. "Physicochemical" relates to physical and chemical properties, and "Environmental" refers to topics such as solar irradiation and wind. "Plant" indicates the main focus of this book, but the approach, equations developed, and appendices apply equalIy welI to animaIs and other organisms. We wilI specificalIy consider water relations, solute transport, photosynthesis, transpiration, respiration, and environmental interactions. A physiologist endeavors to understand such topics in physical and chemical terms; accurate models can then be constructed and responses to the internal and the external environment can be predicted. Elementary chemistry, physics, and mathematics are used to develop concepts that are key to under-standing biology -the intent is to provide a rigorous development, not a compendium of facts. References provide further details, although in some cases the enunciated principIes carry the reader to the forefront of current research. Calculations are used to indicate the physiological consequences of the various equations, and problems at the end of chapters provide further such exercises. Solutions to alI of the problems are provided, and the appendixes have a large tist of values for constants and conversion factors at various temperatures.

X-Ray Diffraction Study of Nematic Smectic A and C Liquid Crystals
Author: B. I. Ostrovskii
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9783718649075
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 76
Book Description
Reviews recent studies of X-ray scattering phenomena in liquid crystals, in particular their relationship to phase-transition physics. Also explored are the main approximations which are used to obtain structural information from the scattering spectre of liquid crystals and to determine the short-range order in the molecule arrangement.

1,3-Alkadiene-Phosphonates
Author: A. V. Dogadina
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9783718650514
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 74
Book Description
This text examines the formation, physical characteristics and chemical properties of 1,3-alkadienephosphonates with various structures. The special features of P-C bond-forming reactions and methods of forming conjugated multiple bond systems as applied in the synthesis of 1,3-alkadienephosphonates are discussed and the application of physical methods, especially 1H-, 13C- and 31P-NMR and X-ray crystallography, in determining the structures of organophosphorus compounds is demonstrated. The principal reactions of 1,3-alkadienephosphonates are presented.

Electron Liquid in Disordered Conductors
Author: A. M. Finkel'stein
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9783718649907
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 120
Book Description
This volume proceeds from a description of a disordered electron liquid via effective functional or diffusion modes to a theory of interacting electrons in disordered conductors that is of the Fermi-liquid type but with renormalizable parameters. The influence of disorder on the temperature of the superconducting transition in homogeneous amorphous films is analyzed theoretically. Critical properties in the vicinity of metal-insulator transitions are discussed and spin instability is considered: the latter shows the great importance of spin fluctuation in the region of the transition.

Multidimensional Strange Attractors and Turbulence
Author: I. S. Aranson
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9783718648689
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 94
Book Description
The authors explore the origin of multidimensional strange attractors and their role in describing turbulence. It includes an analytical estimation of the deminsions of strange attractors for models described by differential-difference equations and discusses the conditions in which space-homogeneous chaos is stable with respect to random perturbations in flow systems.
