Book Description
The true story of a young pilot who disappeared on a routine mission, resulting in a rescue attempt on a remote and inhospitable island in the South Pacific. In September 1943, as America began advancing from its foothold on Guadalcanal, a young American airman was lost in heavy weather over the South Pacific on what was expected to be a routine flight. In examining that loss and the events leading up to a rescue attempt on an island in the South Pacific, and bringing together societies utterly alien to each other, Survival in the South Pacific brings together the big themes of the Pacific War. Lieutenant Leonard Richardson and his comrades had been swept from their homes across America, trained at speed for war, and dispatched to one of the remotest places on the globe. American war plans in place when Pearl Harbor was attacked poorly reflected the capabilities of its military, and the limits imposed by America’s far-flung and indefensible territories. The “Germany First” policy had resulted in a deeply uncertain future for forces in the South Pacific and Australia—the United States was unprepared for the global war that came to it in late 1941, even as the pipeline of men and materiel began to fill. Young Allied and Japanese aviators, sailors, and soldiers, were not the only ones thrown into the swirling maelstrom of war that had engulfed the Pacific—the indigenous islanders were also immersed in a new reality. In bringing together individual stories of men at war, this book gives a new perspective on the Pacific War.

Book Description
Pilot Here or Pile It There is an autobiography relating many of Bill’s experiences during 45 years of a widely diversified career as pilot. It also includes a few unusual events or circumstances that Bill encountered as a direct result of being a pilot. He attained his civilian instructor and instrument ratings in mid 1946, which early on qualified him to engage in almost unlimited piloting endeavors. Considering that his activities as a pilot included; a military career, manager of a civilian flight school and charter service, a non-scheduled air-freight pilot and Civil Air Patrol pilot, some interesting situations were bound to occur. I neglected to mention he was chief pilot in a failed attempt to start a scheduled air shuttle service. Bill’s one ambition that he never achieved was to be in a combat situation. He received his Army Air Corps pilot wings and commission in June 1944, during WWII at the age of nineteen. He had two breaks in military service from which he was recalled in August of 1950 for the Korean conflict and again in 1958 prior to Viet Nam. Bill’s three tours of active duty certainly provided ample opportunities for the Air Force to fulfill his one missing challenge.

Book Description
The purpose of this handbook is to provide aviation enthusiasts with a simple checklist on where to find the surviving retired military aircraft that are preserved in the state of Florida. The museum staffs and volunteer organizations in Florida have done a particularly good job of preserving the great variety of American combat veteran aircraft, illustrated here. Hopefully, as more aircraft are recovered from their crash sites in the bush and restored, traded or brought back from private owners, that they too will be added to the record. The book lists the aircraft alphabetically by manufacturer, number and type. This list is also appended with a brief summary of the aircraft presently on display within the state and a bit of its history in the US military.
