Phase 1 of the South Saskatchewan River Basin (SSRB) Water Management Plan was completed in June 2002, with the issuance of the document: Phase One, Water Allocation Transfers. Phase 2 of the Water Management Plan began shortly thereafter, with the primary goal of finding the balance between water consumption and environmental protection in the basin. The water management plan for the South Saskatchewan River Basin (SSRB) is intended to provide guidance to decision makers and act as a foundation for future watershed management planning of sub-basins in the SSRB by Watershed Planning and Advisory Councils and stewardship groups. The plan applies to all the named rivers and tributaries in the SSRB; these are: the Red Deer, Bow, Oldman, and South Saskatchewan River Sub-basins. The report includes recommendations on water management strategies, the establishment of an Interbasin Water Coordinating Committee, future watershed management planning priorities, recommended water conservation objectives, and implementation responsibilities. Appendices contain information on the public consultation process, a description of the main planning initiatives believed to have some connection to water use and conservation in the SSRB, a list of issues not considered in the SSRB planning process, and previous instream objectives and water conservation objectives. --Includes text from document.
