Book Description
"Oil and gas discoveries in Australia's offshore basins are concentrated on the North West Shelf (Northern Carnarvon, Browse and Bonaparte basins) and Bass Strait (Gippsland, Otway and Bass basins). While discoveries have been made in a few regions outside these areas (e.g. Perth Basin), a large proportion of Australia's offshore basins remain exploration frontiers. However, the decline in oil production from the North West Shelf and Bass Strait basins since 2000 has led to an increasing exploration interest in the frontier basins. In order to improve our knowledge of the offshore frontiers and encourage exploration to these areas, from 2003-2011, Geoscience Australia was funded by the Australian Government to undertake a series of pre-competitive data acquisition and analyses programs in frontier basins around the Australian margin. This Record presents a comprehensive inventory of the geology, petroleum systems, exploration status and data coverage for 35 frontier basins, sub-basins and provinces, that draws on the results of those pre-competitive data programs, as well as exploration results and the geoscience literature. The Record also provides an assessment of the critical science and exploration questions and issues for each area. The results of each basin assessment are summarised in a prospectivity ranking. The availability of data and level of knowledge in each area is reflected in a confidence rating for that ranking. While the prospectivity of some areas is widely acknowledged to be high (e.g. Ceduna Sub-basin), the perception of prospectivity in many basins is negatively affected by the amount or quality of data available; in these basins, the acquisition of new data or targeted research could make a significant difference to the understanding of petroleum potential and likelihood of success. Therefore, recommendations for future work that could assist in addressing key knowledge or data gaps are included in each basin assessment." -- Online abstract.

Book Description
"Following the publication of Geoscience Australia record 2014/09: Petroleum geology inventory of Australia's offshore frontier basins by Totterdell et al (2014), the onshore petroleum section embarked upon a similar project for onshore Australian basins. The purpose of this project is to provide a thorough basis for whole of basin information to advise the Australia Government and other stakeholders, such as the petroleum industry, regarding the exploration status and prospectivity of onshore Australian basins. Eight onshore Australian basins have been selected for this volume and these include: the McArthur, South Nicholson, Georgina, Amadeus, Warburton, Wiso, Galilee and Cooper basins. This record provides a comprehensive whole of basin inventory of the geology, petroleum systems, exploration status and data coverage for these eight onshore Australian basins. It draws on precompetative work programs by Geoscience Australia as well as publically available exploration results and geoscience literature. Further more, the record provides an assesment of issues and unanswered questions and recommends future work directions to meet these unknowns."--Online abstract.

Book Description
"A large proportion of Australia's onshore sedimentary basins remain exploration frontiers. Industry interest in these basins has recently increased due to the global and domestic energy demand, and the growth in unconventional hydrocarbon exploration. In 2016, Geoscience Australia released an assessment of eight central Australian basins that summarised the current status of geoscientific knowledge and petroleum exploration, and the key questions, for each basin. This publication provides a comprehensive assessment of the geology, petroleum systems, exploration status and data coverage for additional three basins in western and central Australia: the Canning, Perth and Officer basins. The Perth and Canning basins are producing petroleum basins, however, they may be regarded as frontier basins for unconventional hydrocarbon resources. The Officer Basin is a large, unproven frontier basin which has seen little exploration to date."--Online abstract.

Book Description
"The Onshore Basin Inventory is a summary of data and geological knowledge of hydrocarbon-prone onshore basins of Australia. Volume 1 of the inventory covers the McArthur, South Nicholson, Georgina, Wiso, Amadeus, Warburton, Cooper and Galilee basins. Under the Exploring for the Future (EFTF) program, Geoscience Australia expanded this work to compile the Onshore Basin Inventory volume 2, which covers the Officer, onshore Canning and Perth basins. These reports provide a whole-of-basin inventory of geology, petroleum systems, exploration status and data coverage. Each report also summarises aspects that require further work. The Onshore Basin Inventory has provided scientific and strategic direction for pre-competitive data acquisition under the EFTF energy work program. Here we provide an overview of the Onshore Basin Inventory, with emphasis on its utility in shaping the EFTF energy systems data acquisition and analysis program." -- Online abstract.

Book Description
"The Capel and Faust basins are located over the northern part of the Lord Howe Rise, a large offshore frontier region containing a number of basins with untested petroleum prospectivity. Recent data acquisition by Geoscience Australia has significantly improved geological knowledge of these basins. Given the diversity of acquired data, comparative sparseness of data coverage, lack of deep drilling control, and complexity of geological structure, effective data integration and analysis methods were essential for a meaningful geological interpretation of the Capel and Faust basins. By using the 3D visualisation and modelling environment provided by GOCAD?, the datasets were captured, processed and interpreted to create an integrated 3D model that enabled key geological and prospectivity questions to be answered. This report summarises the construction methodology and the resulting geological and prospectivity implications of the Capel-Faust 3D geological model."--Executive summary.

Book Description
"As part of the Offshore Energy Security Program (2007-2011), Geoscience Australia (GA) undertook an integrated regional study of the deepwater Otway and Sorell basins to improve the understanding of the geology and petroleum prospectivity of the region. Major outputs of this study include: - New interpretations of basement architecture and structural fabric resulting in the recognition of the Avoca-Sorell Fault System as a major control on sedimentary basin development, - Extension of the tectonostratigraphic framework of Krassay et. al. (2004) into the deepwater Otway and Sorell basins, leading to new insights into their structural and accommodation histories of both basins, and - Petroleum systems modelling indicating that these basins are mature for oil and gas generation."--Online abstract.
