Book Description
We analyze the predictions of perturbative QCD for pion photoproduction on the deuteron [gamma]D 2![pi]°D at large momentum transfer using the reduced amplitude formalism. The cluster decomposition of the deuteron wave function at small binding only allows the nuclear coherent process to proceed if each nucleon absorbs an equal fraction of the overall momentum transfer. Furthermore, each nucleon must scatter while remaining close to its mass shell. Thus the nuclear photoproduction amplitude [pi]° (u, t) factorizes as a product of three factors: (1) the nucleon photoproduction amplitude N1 [pi]° N1 (u/4, /4) at half of the overall momentum transfer, (2) a nucleon form factor N2(/4) at half the overall momentum transfer, and (3) the reduced deuteron form factor f{sub d}(t), which according to perturbative QCD, has the same monopole fall-off as a meson form factor. A comparison with the recent JLAB data for [gamma]D 2![pi]°D of Meekins et al. and the available [gamma]p 2![pi]°p shows good agreement between the perturbative QCD prediction and experiment over a large range of momentum transfers and center of mass angles. The reduced amplitude prediction is consistent with the constituent counting rule p11 [pi]° 2!([theta] cm) at large momentum transfer. This is found to be consistent with measurements for photon lab energies E> 3 GeV at [theta]cm = 90{sup o} and 136{sup o}.

Book Description
Incoherent pion photoproduction on the deuteron is investigated with inclusion of all leading NN effects. Formal expressions for polarization observables are derived and described by various beam, target and beam-target asymmetries for polarized photons and/or oriented deuterons. Results are given for unpolarized cross sections and all possible polarization observables with polarized photons and/or oriented deuterons. The contributions to the spin asymmetry and the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) integral from separate channels are evaluated by explicit integration up to a photon lab-energy of 350 MeV. Effects of final-state interaction are investigated and their role in these observables are found to be significant, specially for neutral-pion production. The extracted results are compared with available experimental data and predictions of other works, and a satisfactory agreement is obtained. We expect that the results presented in this book may be useful to interpret the recent measurements from the high-intensity and high duty-factor electron accelerators MAMI, ELSA, Jefferson Lab, LEGS, MAX-Lab, SPring-8, LNS, and GRAAL."

Book Description
Differential cross sections of the gamma + d -> d + pi{sup 0} reaction were measured at photon beam energies between 0.5 and 2.0 GeV over a wide angular range in CM system. The experiment was performed in Hall B at Jefferson Lab using the CLAS detector. The excitation function, especially at backward CM scattering angles, has been studied with regard to effects due to intermediate on-shell eta and omega rescattering. At CM scattering angles greater than 123 deg our data clearly show an enhancement around 0.7 GeV, which could be attributed to an intermediate on-shell eta-state.

Book Description
The [gamma]n [yields] [pi][sup -]p and [gamma]p [yields] [pi][sup +]n reactions are essential probes of the transition from meson-nucleon degrees of freedom to quark-gluon degrees of freedom in exclusive processes. The cross sections of these processes are also, advantageous, for the investigation of oscillatory behavior around the quark counting prediction, since they decrease relatively slower with energy compared with other photon-induced processes. Moreover, these photoreactions in nuclei can probe the QCD nuclear filtering and color transparency effects. In this talk, I discuss the preliminary results on the [gamma]p [yields] [pi][sup +]n and [gamma]n [yields] [pi][sup -]p processes at a center-of-mass angle of 90[sup o] from Jefferson Lab experiment E94-104. I also discuss a new experiment in which singles [gamma]p [yields] [pi][sup +]n measurement from hydrogen, and coincidence [gamma]n [yields] [pi][sup -]p measurements at the quasifree kinematics from deuterium and [sup 12]C for photon energies between 2.25 GeV to 5.8 GeV in fine steps at a center-of-mass angle of 90[sup o] are planned. The proposed measurement will allow a detailed investigation of the oscillatory scaling behavior in photopion production processes and the study of the nuclear dependence of rather mysterious oscillations with energy that previous experiments have indicated. The various nuclear and perturbative QCD approaches, ranging from Glauber theory, to quark-counting, to Sudakov-corrected independent scattering, make dramatically different predictions for the experimental outcomes.
