Book Description
Excerpt from Periodical Accounts Relating to the Missions of the Church of the United Brethren, Established Among the Heathen, Vol. 8 The number of baptized Cherokees is now seven; and among them is that excellent head-man of the nation, Charles Renatos Hicks, who, with such ability and integrity, concluded the last treaty with the United States; the ground-work, I make no doubt, of a future incorporation of that nation, with the United States people. Indeed, the prospect of this Mis sion. Begins to brighten every way; and we are now most dis tressed on finding ourselves unable to provide missionaries suf. Ficient, who might go forth as labourers in that vineyard. Others, therefore, may, perhaps, reap what we have sown. But we will not repine, if but the Lord's harvest be really gathered in, to Him well pleasing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Periodical Accounts Relating to the Missions of the Church of the United Brethren, Vol. 4: Established Among the Heathen We knew nothing of these horrible events, until the evening of the 16th, when a message was brought, that the savages had burnt an Old woman alive, called Caritas, who was baptized by the Brethren in former times, and had frequently visited Bethlehem; and also that our poor JO shua was kept close prisoner. Words are not able to ex press our horror and grief on hearing this account. Though we were told, that perhaps Joshua would not be killed, we were seized with such terror, that we could neither eat, drink, or sleep, and by day and night were overwhelmed with grief; for we could not trust the superstitious and en raged Indians, and well knew the Violence of their hatred against all believers. Excerpt from Periodical Accounts Relating to the Missions of the Church of the United Brethren, Established Among the Heathen, Vol. 3 The progress, of the Brethren's Missions for these seventy years past in general, been rapid, or attended with that addition of numbers to the Christian Church, which men are apt, in prospect, to pronounce as a certain fruit of the zeal and perseve rance of so many Missionaries, whose only aim in life is the promotion of Christ's Kingdom on earth. Nevertheless, it has been marked with such peculiar proofs of the blessing and favor of God our Saviour, and such unequivocal evidences iof the benefits thereby bestowed upon mankind, that it excites the most lively sensationsiof gratitude in all, who wish well to the human race. Book Description
Excerpt from Periodical Accounts Relating to the Missions of the Church of the United Brethren, Established Among the Heathen, Vol. 26 The usual of two years and a half, which has elapsed since the commencement of a new Volume of the Periodical Accounts required a preface, has perhaps not been marked by events so striking as some similar portions of time. And yet occurrences of interest have not been wanting. Some weary pilgrims old in years and labours have entered into their rest. And the vacancies which they have left, while sources of sorrow to the survivors, have also been mementoes to work while it is day. There is no time for vain regrets. The work is great, for the field is still the world. Nor is the restless, pushing spirit of the age calculated to foster a spirit of ease. Occupy till I come, is the command of the Master; and it would seem as though engagements multiplied for the steward who would be wise and faithful, in proportion as that great event draws near.
