Excerpt from Perils of Wealth and Poverty In February 1913 the Nineteenth Century and After published an article by Canon Barnett in which he dwelt on the stunted lives of the poor, and urged the duty of cheerfully meeting the financial responsibilities which would be involved in remedying the conditions under which they lived. From various readers came the request that my husband would expand the ideas contained into a small book. Though he was much out of health the call to serve the poor met with the usual response, and he had been at work about six weeks on the book when he became too ill ever to finish it. Usually he and I worked at our publications together, but circumstances prevented me from doing my share then, and now it has come to me to do it alone.
